What is Autocross?
What is Autocross?

Autocross, also known as slalom or Solo II, is the sport of driving a car through a course consisting of many turns and transitions. The course is almost always defined by orange pylons (aka cones). Autocross events are usually held in large parking lots or on airport runways.

Autocrosses are held by a variety of car clubs. National racing organizations like SCCA and NASA put on events all over the U.S. Marque clubs like the BMW CCA and Porsche Club of America also hold lots of autocrosses (and these are usually open to any car!). There are also lots of of local autocross clubs that are not tied to national organizations.

The most widespread autocross club is the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America). They have a presence in every state, and their car classifications and event procedures are often used by non-SCCA clubs becasue its a well-developed system. For more information on the SCCA and other autocross clubs, click through the links at the Fast Lane's Links Page.

Autocross is a great way to test the limits of you car's acceleration and handling capabilities, as well as your capabilities as "performance" driver. How well will it rotate through a turn? Will it plow (understeer), or will it slide the back end out (oversteer)? How strong is the acceleration coming out of the turn? Does the car rock 'n roll like a boat in quick transitions, or does it stay tight and on line? Only one way to find out: participate in an autocross!
