does anyone know how to take the shift knob off without breaking it

its an 88 gt automatic

There's two different styles of shifters in '88... The most common one has a clip that looks like a staple that you just pop out of the front of the shift knob with a screwdriver.

I believe the button has to be pulled out and there's a screw under it.
