of course cleaning is the first thing

Cleaning is everything. Buy your self a hardcore degreaser and go to town. A clean engine (and car) is a happy engine (and car). Hiding wires, re-looming wires, painting, polishing... there are a ton of things you can do but it will really boil down to what you want the final look to be. I myself am going all black this year. I have some very nice, clean pics of my engine I would be happy to post once I get home. you can always check out the Intake for sale thread in the "Intakes" section for three great engine bay shots too.

Clean everything, paint everything metal that won't clean up, and don't get all goofy with your color selection.
I like Simple Green, and a brass bristle brush for tough messes.
Simple is effective:
My old 3.1
An old 90 GT that I bought to for $500 and eventually gutted for my 5 speed swap:
About 1 day of work. I really like black rustoleum, brushable not spray paint, for refinishing black parts that have gone to crap.
Last thing: WAX your strut towers, and don't scratch them up when you're working on the car!

Don't be afraid to spend some time. And when you're painting stuff...plan it out to either highlight or hide your components. Some people just go crazy with the spray can and it looks like a Rubik's cube.
And remember...anything can be made to look good with a little work. This was my last engine bay project!

Thanks for reminding me, I need to get in the garage and continue to scrub on mine some more. Contemplating a swap so I'm not sure how much more I want to put into my current set up. This was from last show season. I opted to powder coat a few parts.

Less is more, subtle is good.
I like to polish things!
