i plasti dipped my gtu wheels white which looks damn good. but for some reason i cant for the life get the brake dust of the front.

sooooo! for you guys that have painted....

which paint would be better, rustoleum or duplicolor?
is a clear coat necessary?
the so called "chrome" that comes out to be bright silver-ish or the metallic grey that is sort of gun metal?
maybe go back to white with paint?

just looking for info and opinions

The problem is plasti dip doesn't seal pores well... it sounds like it can get dirt stuck in it... with any other normal paint if you want to paint wheels the only way to prevent this is to clear coat them... Anything else may just stain like the issue your currently having.

that stuff is a little pricey actually. i had to order online since none of the stores carried white. it ended up running about 10 dollars a can from summit racing

clear coat is a protective finish, so yes. color is still up to you.

$10 a can is still not bad... you can buy a decent quality spray paint can for $4-6, or pay a professional near $200

If you want them to last you should powdercoat them or paint them with catalyzed urethane paint. I went the spray paint route when I was younger and it doesn't hold up well. The wheels on my current Beretta are sprayed with the same paint as the rest of the car out of a gun.

you would be surprised... i'm not sure how many years they held up after i did them, but i painted the stocks rims on my 91 ford escort gt, white. did about 4-6 coats, and at least 2 of clear coat. they held up excellent for the 2 years i drove the car (and lots of brake dust to scrub off!)

but yes powder coating is very durable... it's baked on after all.

i have a set of caddy escallade 17"s that will fit on my truck, i'm still deciding which way to go, but they too will be white. need to get the peeling chrome off first.
