Ok, my rearview mirror fell off a few days ago. I got that Permatex rearview mirror adhesive kit, applied it, and everything seemed fine. A few hours later, after it was well cured, i went to put my rearview mirror back on and realized to my horror that I had glued the metal button on backwards.
Not upside down, but backwards, so that the beveled edge that the mirror slides onto is on the wrong side. I might try to file off some of the metal on the edge of the button to make a bevel since from what i've heard, removing this adhesive is a supreme pain in the ***. I guess I'll need a really small metal file of some kind. Better not scrape the windshield...

If anyone has had a similar experience and knows what I'm talking about, please post.

ive tried every adhesive and none of them ever stuck. the mirror just kept fallen down so now i drive without it

trie a window scraper maybe you could wedge the blade inbetween and get it off that way just be real careful.

I think that if you're really careful and can find an open end wrench just a little bigger than the metal piece that's glued onto your windshield, you can slide it over the end of the metal piece and carefully "twist" it off as if you were loosening or tightening a nut.

You could put some masking tape on the side of the wrench facing your windshield, so you don't scratch it.
I would think you could get it off easier this way than trying to use one of those razor blade scrapers to try and get underneath it.

I had trouble with mine falling off if the car sat in the hot sun for a long time. I cleaned up the windshield and the face of the metal piece and even used the primer that comes with the kits, and it still fell off. I finally ended up roughing up a spot on the glass with sandpaper as well as on the metal piece before I re-applied the glue. After gluing it, I taped it down really firmly with a piece of duct tape, and let it sit overnight before I even tried to hang the mirror back on. It worked.

Wow, i haven't checked in on this post in awhile, the car is in the shop right now. Thanks alot for all the suggestions, I'll try 'em out as soon as I can and post back here.

also i try an epoxy i did on my sister escort and after that it will never come off again, make sure you get one that will bond metal or glass

I tried out some of the suggestions here, but still couldn't get it off, so I went to the junkyard and pulled the metal button off an older Corsica, got another rearview mirror kit, and adhered it over the old button. Its back on now, but the button was shaped a little differently then mine, so its a little loose, but with the torx screw pushing into it, it will stay on for as long as I own this PITA car :>

I did the same thing when my rear-view fell off.  Here are the things I tried.

1.  I tried to use a Dremel to grind the corners of the mount to match.  But, the Dremel slipped and chipped my windsheild.  No, big deal, just a tiny little notch.

2.  I tired to glue a new metal piece over the old one, but it fell off after a short time.

3.  The final solution was to glue a new mount just under the old, improperly installed, one.  Make sure you leave enough room between the two mounts to get the mirror on.

i get the junk off with a razor blade. works fine everytime. try apoxy that bonds to glass and metal. i got a fast one that bonds is ready to bond and sticks in 15 mins. and fully cures in a few hours. i let it sit over night just to be safe. its only been a few days but mine hasnt fallen yet. im sure once the bass starts hitting there is a chance it will lossen things up. believe it or not crazy glue worked well for me for a few months. apoxy hopefully does the trick this time.

Heres a good one while I was cleaning my front window, I hit it with my hand,Didnt mean to and it took off the rearveiw mirror and part of the glass! Didnt crack it put now has a nice dip in the window where the glue held it on.Not sure how to fix that one!
