I had the same thing happen to me, and it was the starter.  It didn't disengage, and so it fried.  No relation at all to the tranny problem though.
You sure it doesn't smell like clutch?

You check for fluid leaking anywhere?  Hows the clutch fluid level?  How many miles/old is the clutch?
I really think your slave, master, &/or hose for the clutch system is ruptured.
If it's the external style, 130ish (us dollars) will get you another prebled unit (if you can locate one) .  It is near impossible to bleed the external style.

Yeah, if it's stuck in 2nd gear it should move, or at least jerk forward before stalling.  Where's the smoke coming from?

A worn clutch will make it hard to get into gear, but once you get it into gear the car will still drive.

It sounds to me that the though it WAS stuck in second, now it has slipped out and is in neutral.
I can't see the clutch being the problem here, it would take such a massive failure of the clutch that would have created a horrid sound and I would think that there would still be sound of parts rattleing around with the car running and the clutch pedal out.
Is there any pressure on the pedal when you push it in? a massive clutch failure would result in a VERY VERY soft clutch pedal, to the near point of it not returning to the up position when sitting still.

I say that it is an internal transmission problem.

I have seen where the clutch disc has been shredded and wouldn't move the car at all.(Not mine)  I've also had a clutch wear out on me where I could push the clutch pedal in, put it in first, and then just let the clutch out completely, THEN give it gas.  It took off like an automatic would.  Just enough of bite to move the car, but not enough to stall it out if it was just dropped into gear.  God I miss that Escort........NOT.

The clutch is shot. There is simply no more material left on the discs to grab and spin the flywheel. If you can push in the clutch pedal, put the car in gear, and release the clutch pedal all the way without the car stalling or moving - the clutch is shot.

My clutch went once, I could still drive though. I shut the car off, put it into second gear, started it while hitting the gas. The car will jump forward like its stalling out until it gets going though, so beware of things in front of you. It beats the hell out of you're gears / starter though.

Once mobile you can power shift: get you're rpms up to there they would be when you shift to the next gear, and pull it to neutral, apply a small amount of pressure onto the next gear, it should pop in without pushing the clutch in.

I never mastered the art of down shifting without a clutch, however I am told it can be done. Once stopped though you will need to shut the car off and replace it into gear / start it the same way as before.

this takes a toll on you're car but at least you will make it to the parts store / work for a few days without having to walk.
