3.1 rocker torque

Post by Lespaul59 »

Got a beretta 90-91 v-6 and the Haynes said 18 foot pounds at t.d.c. Is that a given torque or is there any more turning after torque. Is it safe to say 216 inch pounds set and forget?

The 60-degree V-6 pivot-ball rockers (like yours) are a 'one and done' torque setting. There is a little debate on whether or not you need to set for TDC or not (really just make sure there is no spring-pressure on the rocker arm), but I say it is more accurate without cam-lobe pressure. 216 inch-pounds is the same as 18 foot-pounds, so if Haynes calls for 18 on the V-6 rockers, then yes, set and forget. :good:

Torqued them without being at T.D.C. and worked perfectly.

Not too surprised. I've done that too, but I felt bad about it later. :D Honestly, on a stock 3.1, there isn't a whole lot of valve-spring pressure to upset your torque reading. Generally speaking, I recommend following documented procedures until you get to a point of knowing what corners are safe to cut. I want to say that I even read the procedure once where it said nothing about rotating each cylinder to TDC compression, because I seem to recall that difference as compared to an SBC, but I don't remember for sure. On some other engines, it might be a lot more critical... Glad it worked out for you.
