'91 Quad fan assembly

Post by Asylum »

Ok so my cooling (rad) fan exploded a couple of summers ago (what a bloody mess) and if I'm going to venture on down to wherever the hell it is B'Fest got relegated to this June, I suppose I should have one.

Checking Dorman and elsewhere for a replacement assembly they are saying the Quad fan assembly is different from the V6/I4 unit, and of course, not available. WTF? Did they move the bolt holes?

As I recall the place that fixed the car at the time (of course I was 300 miles away from home) said something about a fan assembly not being available, but I dismissed that as being in the middle of nowhere, and they just ripped me for $450 for a damn radiator.

NOT interested in used, and aftermarket/performance type is only a last resort at this point. Would prefer plug and play.

Any ideas? What the hell is the difference?

Cheers

The fan blade and fan motor are both listed on Rockauto... Just not the assembly...

The Fan blade is also listed for the standard 2.2L...

I want to say just bite the bullet and buy a 96 slim motor fan and slap it in there... It's held in with ONE bolt and I honestly can't see it not fitting the quad bay.

$25 Comes with the rubber feet

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RADIATOR-FAN-MO ... ef&vxp=mtr

I know this is asking a lot but if you can get a picture of the bottom radiator support I could tell you if the holes are there for the feet for the fan... then there should already be a hole on the top for the one bolt that holds it. It's one of those threaded clips that just goes on the support.

I can take a picture of how mine fits when I get home if you want as well... That will give you a good idea of how it should go.

It should be equipped. My 90's were and the 'J' Clip is easily obtainable to install.

Yes there are two bolt holes on the bottom of the rad support.

What's left of the original fan cage is still bolted to the car, as is the fan motor. (they were good in putting all the broken stuff back on the car so it would be easy to figure out the replacement stuff. The plug is still just hanging there.) Hell I'm guessing the motor still works. It's the fan blades that let go, LOL!

I can't for the life of me see why a V6 assembly wouldn't work, but returning stuff to the States is a HUGE PITA!

And I'm hesitant about a 10 year old used fan. When they go, they take a lot with them!

I wonder if a NEW '96 version uses the same plug. I'm guessing not, LOL!

I believe they do. I will check my indy when I get home and the newer fans don't mount with bolts at the bottom they just sit into two holes where the rad sits.

I'd go with the 96 assembly and buy a new blade from rock auto... Or just buy the blade listed on RA for the 91... I didn't realize you had the motor and housing still.

I'm not going to use the old motor or the enclosure.

All new at this point.

If the '96 type will plug in (that has got to be too good to be true) then that is the fix. I'll just buy a new complete replacement unit.

Where are you finding a fully new 96 assembly from?

Dorman Fan plug on Advance Auto is said to fit the 96 and 91 GTZ...

Part No. 85101

So that's a good bet the 96 fan will plug right in.

Well now that is a good question, but someone must make a replacement. What if you smash up a '96?

Your f-ed and need to use a universal one that straps to the rad with those pull through zipties.

Well I checked locally and I can get a '96 Corsica unit for $50 at a yard.

The one on Ebay is shipping prohibitive, although I sent him an offer of $15 plus the $24 shipping!!

(Either one of those would get a brand new blade first.)

Or I can buy the Dorman one for a 3.1 that is a new which I'm sure will fit the car.

If all else fails then I will go the same route as Pauly and install dual aftermarket units.

Hell I have driven it for almost two years, although not much, without the damn fan and not had an issue as yet.

OR I could just stay home and eat all the Oreos myself, ROFL!!

I have the greatest solution: what about a custom fan made completely out of oreos then if it breaks at least you can eat what's left while waiting for the tow truck.

Squares are there that are needed for the 96 style fan. Image

And move bolt from right hole pictured to the left and voila...

And the plug on a 96 looks like this.

Guy on ebay took the $15 offer so that is the way I'm going it seems.

Will order a new blade assembly to go with it.

Thanx Jon et al!!

'96 fan assembly arrived today! WOW! Looks brand new, and it even has the rubber "feet" on it.

Not bad for $15 plus $24 shipping and duty.

Local yard wanted $50 and I had to pull it.

Thanx to Jon for the link.
