another 5sp swap. 1996 z26

Hey guys. Ive been apart of the beretta community since around 1999. Was registered on bstuff, then on here as Beretta__z26. I forgot my password, and have since switched e-mails, so new account.

Description: Black 1996 Z26. Completely stock with 130k miles. Runs great, however I barely have 1st gear, and reverse. (by barely, i mean feels like a lot of slipping). no rust/dents, blah blah blah

Idea: Replace crapped out 4t60e with getrag 282 out of my 1990 3.1 indy.

Questions: I have the 5speed and 3400 swap docs. Can I use my 1990 3.1 5sp axles instead of the quad 4 axles out of cutlass?? (by doing so, if possible, i know i will not have the axle abs gear since no abs in 1990) <--- which brings me to my next question: If I can use my 3.1 5sp axles, can i swap out the abs brake booster/brake lines on the z26 for my indy non-abs brake booster/brake lines??

I understand that the 3500 block has a different half shaft bolt locations. Does that mean the 5speed and the 4t60e will not work without a custom made mount??

You can use the axles, but as you mentioned, you'll lose the ABS. That's a lot of work to swap the entire brake system, and you'll still have the dash light on for the ABS system; why not just get axles (really any 3.1 5spd axles 92-93 should work - based on what axles you're planning on using, I'd be willing to bet that's my old writeup you're referencing).

If you make a custom wedge mount or a custom mount for the jackshaft/carrier, then the 3500 block will work.

Thank you. It is alot of work, but i was looking at the free'd up space for a future (but not likely) 3400/3500 + snail combo.

I've been carrying around the swap docs for quite awhile now. Great write ups with pictures!

Next question thats not really a question. Im obviously using the pre-92 tranny mounts. Can i cut the driver side dog bone off 90 sub frame and notch/weld onto my 96 sub frame? I mean, i can. It would be less mixing and matching suspension parts from different years. Worth it??

Switching out the abs master wouldn't be that big of a job I don't think. And you can just pull the light from the cluster. I'd do everything possible to keep OEM axles rather than replacement.

Apparently my posts from taptalk are not showing up. Here is another idea im pondering: obviously im using the pre-92 trans mounts. instead of sourcing a 92-93 passenger subframe, and using the indy driver subframe, would it be reasonable to just cut the dog bone from the indy, then notch/weld onto my 96 subframe? going to the yard to source a subframe wouldnt be to hard, i'd just rather not if i dont need to. Looking close to the subframe mount, looks to be welded around select sides that would be easy to get to with a grinder. Anyone go this route or is this a ridiculous idea?

looking around the brake booster on the Z and INDY, it appears they could be swapped. I guess my first post should have included the question: was there any change in the brake booster (internally) between the 1990 v6 and 1996 v6 other than the abs module on the exterior? The 5speed swap indicates that the brake lines need to be loosened to get to the auto trans mount. couldnt be THAT hard to make the swap around that point in the project...?

Woody, are you implying i could use the 96 auto axles on the 90 getrag, or are you stating that by switching out the abs master, i'll have no reason to get axles from another model? I.E. keep the 90 beretta axles.

Correct me Woody if I am inaccurately interpreting; Factory OEM axles are recommended as aftermarket/reman are known to be problematic (which is true) . However, at this point, the age factor of OE vs 'other' source is moot.

Yes. OEM axles are more durable than aftermarket was the point. Especially important with a 5spd. Even old OEM axles with a million miles on them are stronger than new aftermarket. Ask Barry...haha

As for welding the mount on the subframe, I don't see why that would be a problem.

For the brake master, do you plan on going to rear disc in the future? If so, use a Lumina master that has the rear disc proportioning built in.

I have done a fair share of research on the neon rear disk upgrade. I have no plans as yet to do the conversion, mainly for the fact i've yet to work on any brakes myself and I'm hesitant on owning a mutt!! Thank you for the Lumina info! What year would i look for? do i need to have lumina rear brake lines or will Beretta lines work? is there a thread on this subject, incase im repeat questions that have already been answered...

Any and all information and personal opinions are very valuable. The swap is fairly straight forward. My brother-in-law and I can have it knocked out over the weekend. I'm just trying to keep as many L-body parts as possible...

Yeah there's a thread in the brakes/suspension section. Non-abs would be a 91 Lumina. Direct swap for three Beretta master once you swap the reservoirs.
