So, this weekend I quit using my desktop...it is spontaneously rebooting and I need to get the files off it to my external. Been using the wife's laptop for internet and god damn it's slow (same as the Dell). I think I'm better off to buy a new laptop and use the current one for the garage.

With regards to your desktop. 2 possibilities. One, bad capacitors on the motherboard. 2 bad power supply.

You can easily get an external adapter for your hard drive and move the files that way too, if the computer won't stay on.

Buy either an Asus, Lenovo(formally IBM), or Acer. Other brands that are ok, are Gateway (Acer and Gateway are bed buddies), Toshiba is a maybe. Stick with their intel versions, not the AMDs. Sony is overpriced, HP, Compaq, Dell have horrid support. There are some other brands out there too if you want to experiment. But I have had the absolute best luck over the years with the first 3. You can easily find deals with i3 processors for around 400. i5's can be had starting around 500.

Thanks for the heads up, Ace. The failing desktop I'm running now is an HP. It has served me well for the last 6 years, but it's time to upgrade. Just makes more sense to do that with the laptop as well, rather than having two outdated ones. The one I have will work fine for tuning and I can leave it in the garage with wifi for stupid little stuff.

So I take that as a no then?

I'm with Ace. Lenovo and Asus are excellent brands right now.

Yeah, it just makes more sense for me now. Still a great deal...perfect for someone who needs a tuning PC.
