Actually that's the complete opposite of what I was thinking.

If you barely turn on a water spicket there is verly little water coming out of it. this will resemble an 8gauge wire.
If you turn that same water spicket on full blast, there is a whole bunch of water coming out at once, allowing you to fill up a glass quicker. This would resemble a 1/0 wire.

The various gauges between that will resemble the amount the spicket is turned on.

The smaller the wire, the more resistance. It's really hard for those little green men (or women) to travel down that wire. Some have to wait in line for a while before continuing their journey to the other end of the wire.
The larger the wire, the less little green men (or women) have to wait, the more little green men (or women) can travel down the wire at the same time.
