Double din'ing it!

Post by ndianabones »

This was a very recent project i undertook recently and thought i would share it considering it has been asked more than a few times, i thought i would document it for a post.

Recently got my hands on a wx-gt90bt for my 95. yep a double din radio.
http://store.sony.com/bluetooth-app-rem ... s-Speakers

The tools i am using for this project.
a craftsman (dremel) cordless rotary tool
a rotary file and diamond cutting disk w/ attaching hardware
a sharpie and some 320 and 500 paper for smoothing the rough edges and making it look clean
also used my snap-on cordless screwdriver with drill attachment

though as most of us know the radio opening in the dash is big enough to accommodate a double din radio, but the trim plate is only a din and 1/2 opening. so whats a guy or gal to do. here is what i did. after removing the face/trim plate. i had to figure out the centering of the radio to the face plate. best way i saw was to have the new radio in and see were i would need to trim. which i marked in this pic.
i trimmed the excess at the upper and lower ribs of the trim plate. now granted this wont be the same for all radios. this is just my experience.

next thing i had to tackle was the depth of the opening. yes i had not done this next step all the years i have had this beretta.
first was to drill the rivet head off at the back of the opening (see red arrow)

once that was accomplished i used my rotary tool with cutting disk to zip along as close to the back edge of the opening as possible and then do the same across the side wall. i was able to get far enough back i did'nt need to worry about the rivets on the bottom of the opening at the back.

yours should look similar to this once complete

i just bent the metal tab down in the back. did'nt see a reason to remove it.
with that being accomplished and my trim plate also finished i was ready to install.
it looks a little cleaner than the last pic. i did go back and clean up the top more. but it fit very nicely and so far works like a charm.
