I really did it now... need advice...

Post by K_Watson »

I tore the foam on one of my subs sometime in the last week. :sorry:

The subs are 10" MTX Thunder 5000's from 2003, BUT... they only have one year of use on them 2011-12.

The foam on one tore 1/3 of the way around and the other is just starting to tear.

These subs are fed their full 250W RMS each and have painted fiber cones. They were not excessively abused and both speaker cones move freely with no noises... realistically, will refoam kits work for these or do I need to just replace them?

you should stop by a local electronics shop and ask, or if you want to do it yourself, you may be able to find something to work online and order it. not sure how much gap the foam 'fills' on those particular subs

Both shops in a reasonable distance stopped re-edging "years ago". I'll call further into town tomorrow.

They have about 1/2 inch on each edge.

1/2" is pretty standard, should be no problem... that's the thing, it's kinda specialty... most wouldnt bother looking into a refoam due to age. but in your case it sounds very cost effective... not well used stuff

Especially since I got these free from a good friend.

If I hadn't I wouldn't have subs to have blown

I have re foamed subs before, its not that bad to do at home. find the foams on ebay or where ever. get most of the old glue and foam off that you can, and use contact cement to re glue it.

Is the foam drying out ? maybe try to find a rubber surround replacement will add some extra stiffness to it as well.

Curious why it would blow apart, other then its drying out and falling apart some foam wont take damp and cold weather, but if you had the sub wired backwards and it was pushing out rather then pulling it that could damage it too.

if its just a small area you could urethane it too if your not worried how it looks lol.. temporary fix anyway.

speakers are hooked up backwards and you'll be missing a few frequencies(most people cant hear the difference anyways) if you notice they are pulling in (out of phase). pushing out for full response.
