The headers ABSOLUTELY woke up this engine! And the chip that Rodney has created.

(Who said you can't tune OBD-1?)

Hell it will run 14.30's with the headers closed with the 2 1/2" new exhaust.

BIG thanks to Lil'Jon for his help on the headers, but at the end of the day, with the ceramic coating, you're still looking at almost $1500++

This engine is 100% stock, valve springs, cam, whatever the hell the compression is.

I AM a big believer that the 3500, as I have been spouting over and over, is a WAY better investment for power over a 3400.

And there is still more there. (Remember the throttle stop. B'Fest folks saw it!) It's STILL there so at ?? 85% throttle.

This is getting FUN!

Did you solve the issue of it hitting the rev limiter before taking off the throttle stop? Or did that chip fix it? With the new TB and no throttle stop its easily mid 13's, hopefully they get along.

Nice run!

Well here's the update from Sunday.

I think I hurt it.

In fact I'm pretty sure the converter is TOAST!

Best all day "with the headers CLOSED!" was 14.544 @ 95.27 mph.

60' times exploded to a best of 2.10 to a worst of 2.20.

MPH is about right, but it won't launch to save it's sorry arse!

And the R/T's were just embarrassing!!

Anyway, the good with the bad.

Lost in the Semi-Final to buddy Tim's Cavy.

Car is off to the trans shop tomorrow morning and I'll let them pull it apart and see what they find.

And it STILL has the throttle stop on it!.

More to come I suppose.

Well it's broken, AND fixed.

Evidently the neck on the converter cracked, and the chain was "unbelievably streched" Not my words.

New FD HD is in and a new chain, new clutches and steels all the way, new pump, and it's basically all new again.

Surprisingly the gear set was just fine. Way to go Jeff! (EP)

Bill (Mr. Transmission, Milton Ontario) can't believe this thing lasts more than 10 runs with the abuse I'm giving it.

So far the average is about 150 runs.

Axles look like new, and the fluid wasn't burnt. I do check it.

Good cooler and I'm just beating this poor 3t40 to death it seems.

The converter? He's going to pull it apart and see. It has just over 500 runs on it.

Anyway, it's home, seems fine, and ready to go next Sunday.

More to come I'm sure.

13.50's? Maybe. That 3t40 is not going to stand up in the new project.. Unless you can find some stronger parts.

Well I suppose you and others are right.

4t65 (or something like that) keeps getting mentioned, especially by Jeff (EP) and Bill.

Evidently they are alot stronger, and I may actually be able to drive this POS more than 180 miles on a tank of fuel.

But they are also ALOT heavier.

Let's see how long this one lasts.

He did cram an extra clutch plate in, and upped the pump pressure.

It shifts like a Mutha, chirping the DR's at 10 mph on the 1-2.

He also put in a brand new governor so "maybe" with some messing around with the kickdown, this thing might actually see full WOT soon.

I have some ideas on that, but not until the TCE 65 TB gets here sometime this week, and not until after the Points Race on Sunday.

This project is becoming "How to wear out an engine, to know how to tune the next one!" ÂÂÂ

The 3t40 hates the dig runs.  They can live for a looong time if you only do roll-ons.  I just rebuilt mine to stock specs (on my bench table) a few weeks ago and it's holding "fine" .  I know as soon as I start ripping on it from a dead stop, it'll let me know the true story and leave me walking.

Also, as I was told, the 2nd "gear" is always going to be too mushy and the more we try to firm it up, 1st will become really harsh and 3rd will not take the high slamming for too much longer.
There HAS to be a streetable race version of the 3t40 out there somewhere!

I really doubt you will be wearing that engine out anytime soon Eric. It isn't a quad.

13.5 I'm not so sure of... 13.7 MAYBE... 4t65e is not the route for you to go... I think that 2nd gear in the 3t40 is where your biggest gain is over me.  Just look at the hard numbers.

4t60e-4t65e
1st -- 2.921
2nd -- 1.568
3rd -- 1

3t40
1st -- 2.84
2nd -- 1.6
3rd -- 1

SO you have a higher first gear so that would equate to less wheel spin, but then your 2nd gear is much closer... I go from a really low first to an even higher 2nd... My span between 1st and 2nd is horrable.

3.73 3t40 setup at the wheels ratio

1st - 10.60
2nd - 5.97
3rd - 3.73

3.69 4t60-65e setup

1st - 10.774
2nd - 5.784
3rd - 3.69

and of course my 3.42 that I'm running

1st - 9.988
2nd - 5.362
3rd - 3.419

I have a question for you about 3400 motor. I have a 1996 chevy beretta z26 with a 3100 motor and the cam snapped. Can I install a install heads from my 1996 3100 berettta motor and install on a 2002 alero 3400 motor. I think the heads are different, just thought I would ask and see if you could help me out. I plan on installing the 2002 alero motor then in my 1996 chevy beretta, there would be no problems to worry about is there. Any information would be great. Thank you....
