Lastly what does gtu stand for, and gtz for that matter? Grand touring..? And where does 26 in z26 come from?
GTU is from the IMSA GT race series. GTU is a group in that:

(from wiki) "GTU cars were Grand Touring type cars with engines of 2.5 L displacement or less. This series was dominated by the Porsche 914-6 and by the SA22 Mazda RX-7s (1978–1985) through the end of the 80's.

As for Z26, it was a the number between the cavalier Z24 and the Camaro Z28 in Chevy's line-up to round it out.

GTZ....Not a clue
The "U" class is actually limited to engines 3.0L and under. Tommy Kendall and Max Jones were driving them in 88 and 89. Tommy Kendall won the championship in both 88 and 89 IIRC.

Also, here's a few pics of the stripes I was talking about. My black 88 is painted whereas the white 89 is a sticker-pinstripe.

Getrag 282 5spd manual or a TH125C 3 spd auto with lockup. Getrag is awesome, TH125C is a tempramental bitch. A shift kit is a necessity and be prepared to change the TCC solenoid. It's a $13 part that's actually very easy to replace.

As for the digi-dash, I'm not certain how rare they are. I have the digi-dash in both of my U's.

Yep like other members have pointed out GTU stand for Grand Touring Under (2.5L). Looking at that pinstripe makes me want to install it instead of panting the trim. Less hassle and same look.

GTU89 wrote: The digital dash is awesome, I don't think I'd ever give it up. So nice to see your instant and average MPG, outside temperature, fuel range..ect And it's just plain neat looking (mine's my avatar for now) IMO it's the best looking digital dash from the 80's-early 90's, seems like it aged nicely.
So true!

Makes me wonder what other cars are out there with the retro digital dashes! It is no coincidence that three of my six cars all have a digital dash:

90 Indy
84 300ZX 50th AE
97 Town Car

The '87 Cavalier Z24 I had was made with a digital dash. Eh, They are cool but problematic.

I haven't really had any problems with mine, other than the fact that I think a wire may be coming loose, because when it acts screwy you can punch the top of the dash and it works great then, wasn't doing that until it sat for the week or so when I was having the trouble with it I posted about before.

I think I've seen the Cavalier ones, eh is pretty much how I'd describe it (the Cavalier one)

Found this a while ago before I got the GTU, some of the videos no longer work, including the Beretta one.

Don't know why the Beretta digital dash only got a Honorable Mention, but hey.
