Beretta Fest 2015 Watkins Glen NY
Cliff Sumbler would like to propose for Bfest 2015
Bfest 2015 Watkins Glen NY
If you believe that Beretta Fest can only be in big urban cities like Pittsburgh, Detroit, Charlotte, Chicago, Indianapolis, and Denver. Then I am sure this proposal will be of no interest to you. If however you have interest in the road less travelled. Were a leisurely walk on a unique trail is more your speed. By speed I also mean where Grand Prix racing got its origins in America in 1948 and still going. None other than Watkins Glen NY. I have no doubt you have all heard of the place.
Cars, Racing, and Touristy.
Watkins Glenn NY.
Located at the South end of Seneca Lake In the heart of New York Estate Wine Country
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tgr6x56KH8s
I’m not exactly a local (just over a 2hrs drive)
However I am a frequent visitor and very familiar with the area.
The first issue is accommodation
Watkins Glenn is only a small village 2010 census 1,800. Lodging is limited to small independent hotels, B&B’s and a couple of very expensive waterfront resorts. Ithaca located about 30 minutes east of Watkins Glen has a full range of chain hotels far better suited to our needs
Suggested Itinerary
Thursday
Check in and free time
Buttermilk Falls and Upper Trueman located just minutes from what I will call Hotel Alley
Friday am
Check out the Original 6.6 mile Grand Prix Course
First Road Racing Circuit in America 1948 - 1952
The 6.6 mile road course, which is still driveable today, cuts through the village streets and the back roads of the countryside.
Watkins Glenn State Park
http://nysparks.com/parks/142
North Entrance, tables but no picnic shelter
The upper (north) entrance parking lot would be an excellent location as OUR Start/Finish line, a line of chalk?
What maybe better immediately west of this entrance is a Railroad track and a sizable parking area that will avoid paying park day use admission $7 I believe
Propose something like a time rally.
Copies of the map will be provided. With registration bag.
http://nysparks.com/parks/attachments/W ... arkMap.pdf
Some trusted person(s) on the Committee does the track. This person(s) time(s) can be averaged then will be sealed in an envelope.
Anyone interested may run the course leaving from the starting point at say 10 minute intervals and their times recorded on an official master sheet. Start and finish times entered from an Official clock (smartphone ?) And initialled by the driver.
At the BBQ the master sheet will be on display and the envelope opened. The person with the closest time wins. Removes the need for speed and by chance breaking any traffic regulations. Driving and map reading skills and luck with traffic lights the prime factors
Some type of signup sheet at registration, with start time? An evil though, knowing how things sometimes take forever to get started. The clock starts at your assigned sign up time. Not when you actually cross to the start/finish line.
The original course was run clockwise. But no reason we can’t leave it up to the drivers which way they go from the start/finish line. There will be congestion and traffic lights on Main St. Watkins Glenn
It’s an easy 10 minute drive from the park north entrance to the raceway
Walk the splendour of Watkins Glenn State Park Trail. Stairs not your thing, shuttle available to top and walk down
http://gowaterfalling.com/waterfalls/watkins.shtml
Or explore many of the dozens of water falls in Tompkins County
How about a cruise on Seneca Lake

Friday Night Drag Racing if you’re not interested in doing the Grand Prix track

1 hrs. Drive South of Watkins Glenn in Tioga Centre NY
However only offers a 1/8th mile track
There are 2 others offering 1/4 mile tracks

Another in WIllianson NY, about the same distance but I don’t know anything about that one.
Saturday Car show
There are several State parks in the area with Picnic Shelters, Havana Glenn.
Also an Ithaca municipal park that should do
Possible Go Carts

http://www.ci.ithaca.ny.us/parks/stewartpark.cfm
Closest and cheapest, on the shore of Cayuga Lake though located right on Cayuga Lake swimming is not recommenced due to environment issues and may be crowed on Saturdays
New York State Parks $7 day use per vehicle
Buttermilk State Park Minutes from Ithaca
The closest on the state parks.
http://www.nysparks.com/parks/151/details.aspx
Has an Upper and Lower picnic shelter.
Lower shelter near seasonally supervised swimming area at the plunge pool of Buttermilk Falls
The Upper picnic shelter is in a heavily wooded area. Biting insects may be an issue
Robert H. Treman State Park 10 minutes from Ithaca and my strongest recommendation
http://nysparks.com/parks/135/details.aspx
Have 3 picnic shelters.
Upper, this is also upper gorge trail access so parking could be an issue.
Middle, requires driving through a ford, ppl might not want to get their show cars wet.
Lower, just inside the lower entrance to the park. This one has my recommendation
Walking distance to supervised swimming area, bring your swim suit and make a day of it. The swimming area is the one photo’d at the top of the park home page.
Taughannock state park
http://nysparks.com/parks/62/details.aspx
The furthest of the list from Ithaca about 20 minutes
3 shelters.
Southern, close to Marina parking might be an issue on Saturdays
Central should be OK
Lakeside, at the beach. The most expensive of the rentals
The Finger Lakes, are cold deep lakes, beautiful beach but this time of year water temps will be on the, call it brisk side.
Not considered for Car Show and BBQ
