Turn signals won't work

Out of the clear blue, I was driving and I flipped my turn signal on and it wouldn't work.  The green arrows on the dash didn't work and neither did the actual directionals outside the car.  I drove for about an hour and tried it again and they started to work but not like normal.  The signal would start normal and then blink really really fast and then get slow and even sometimes pause for seconds at a time. Then I drove it again yesterday and they cut out on me again and so far they haven't come back yet.  What's wrong w/ my Retta and what can I do for it??

Sounds like it could be the flasher.   I just changed mine last week.    The flasher can be a pain to find.   Remove the panel under the steering wheel and the panel under the steering column.   To fully remove panel under the steering column, you need to detach floor light from panel.   Turn signal flasher can usually be found clipped on to a bracket that suports the steering column.   Unplug old flasher and plug new one in.   New flasher costs less than $4.

Ok I took out both flasher units, the one for the hazards and the one for the directionals and switched them...but my directionals still didn't work and then neither did my hazards.  So I put them back how they orginially were and my hazards work once again but my directionals are still gone. Any ideas?  I checked the fuses and they're good and I'm pretty sure that all the bulbs are working fine.

Aqua - I have a similar problem...

When I turn my right signal on, it functions normally.  When I turn my left signal on the green arrow on the dash stays lit (although dimmly).  The exterior front bumper and side marker do no light however the rear brake/turn will light but will not flash.

When I turn my hazards on the left rear functions normally but the left front bumper signal lights very dimmly.  Also the front turn signals alternate back and forth instead of on/off together.  So when one is on the other is off and vice versa.  WEIRD.  The sidemarker functions normally in this scenerio.

When I turn my headlights on the left green turn arrow stays dimmly light (about 60% normal intensity) although there is no activity with the exterior lights on the left.

Anyone got any ideas to help Aqua or myself?  I thought that it may be a bad bulb (going bad) on that side.  I put in clear fronts for the turn signals a while back and installed a set of Amber bulbs.  Figured the one of the left may be faulty...

the bulb is the l/f is shorted

as for the intial problem from the person who started this--go to the auto parts store to get 2 new flashers---5$ for both and replace them---if it does not fix the problem you need a switch--I think the flasher is dead.

Update:

I went out in the pouring rain after work yesterday to replace my apparently faulty l/f turn bulb.  I removed the bulb assembly and took the bulb out... HEY - what's the little metal piece that just fell?  Oh, look at that!  It's the ground wire that presses up against the outter shell of the bulb.

After further inspection of the bulb and the piece of metal (that I believe is the ground for the outside bulb casing) it would appear that it broke off but b/c of the pressure of the bulb remained mostly in place.  This explains why the bulb would work sometimes and sometimes not.  This would likely also explain the black (burn looking) marks on the bulb casing.  This piece was likely constantly making contact and sparking. ÂÂÂ

So I have taken the bulb out completely and the metal piece and inserted the flasher assembly with no bulb.  But my flasher light still sticks on with the headlights on.  Is this a diagnostic feature to let you know that a bulb is out?

Anyone have a spare turn signal bulb assembly they want to sell??  I could probably rig it with some solder but would rather permanently fix it by replacing the bulb assembly.

I'm having the same problem as Orb Storm.  Right signal works fine, left signal is stuck on.  Noticed that three of the four side markers were out so I went to replace the bulbs, and sure enough, the sockets were corroded and a new bulb wouldn't help this.  Went to the junkyard and picked up some sockets, installed them and put in the new bulbs.  Side markers now work, but still no right turn signal.  It is still stuck on when i try to use it.  Did some more checking around and noticed that a fog light is out.  I have a '94 Z26.  Well, haven't replaced it yet, but soon.  I sure hope that fixes the problem, otherwise i'm off to replace the flasher.  I will post results.

Whenever you install a bulb you might want to grease it or something. Use dielectic compound or whatnot.  But, I've had a LOT of exterior light socket problems.  It happens, especially in salty areas.

It seems pretty common so, if you're having problems with a light, check it's socket first.
