I am my own worst enemy...

Post by Rettax3 »

With my old Plymouth waiting for the new cam bearings (the tool just arrived the other day!), my 3.4 TDC Turbo Z-26 project still very much under the knife, work rolling all over me with more projects than I even want on my plate right now, and the engine-build and five-speed swap still waiting for my 'Vert Iroc-Z, to name a few things I'm working on, I had to [let myself] stumble across this...
First-year GTA, solid car needing minimal body-work, and of course, paint...
First-year GTA, solid car needing minimal body-work, and of course, paint...
Numbers-matching original L98 350 TPI, genuine GTA T/A... I swore up and down I wouldn't get another Pontiac, but this car needed a new home, and had a really good previous owner that cared about what happened to it. So, it followed me home, and now I have ANOTHER project car...

That's a nice find! Should bring it to the yearly Trans Am nationals when its done! May even find needed parts for it while there.
I have an 02 T/A with only 6k miles that I want to take to the national meet someday when I get a closed trailer and a truck.

Thank you! 6k miles?? Wow! In all honesty, one main reason why I even looked at this car was because a good friend of mine had one, same year and similar options but different color in and out (I liked his better). He bought his with only something like 35k miles (a little over 1k miles per year!) and in 98% mint condition (one minor ding on the hood and oxidized paint where the only flaws). I just found out he sold it a few months back... So I feel somewhere in the back of my mind that one of us still needs to have a GTA! :P Hopefully I'll have this thing test-started in the next few weeks, and although I hate to put any holes in a rare car like this one, it WILL get my other WC T-5 five-speed swapped into it... Hey, the 700R4 went bad in this anyway, so... :pardon: It should have been that way in the first place.

Yah the manuals are where its at. Some newer ones like mine have the 6 speed manual. I don't know if the 6 speed trans will fit if you wanted an extra gear.

They fit... I know all about the 6-speed T-56 trannys, and yeah, I would LOVE to upgrade all of my F-bodies (which are all third-gen) to the T-56s, but they are nearly impossible to find for less than $1200 (especially with proper conversion parts to actually install them), and that is outside of my budget. Although, I spent a good part of that on the whole six-speed swap for the GTU's 3800SC, so... %) But that wasn't just a performance upgrade, that 3800 was finally chewing up the 282 I put in with it, and the car needed a stronger transmission. So far, none of my F-bodies are making enough power to eat their five-speeds, and all but one have WC T-5s (World Class, which had improved synchronizers, tapered bearings, and some needle-bearings added vs plain shafts).

Yah the rwd 6 speeds are expensive, I drive mine nice when I take the T/A out. lol. The only rwd 5 speed I have is the AR-5 in my 08 Saturn Sky, that car has the LNF stage 2 kit.

The 282 gears couldnt take it?

The 282 I had in the GTU was already old, and had some issues going into reverse when I pulled it from an '88 GTU. My 3800SC is modified a bit, they are rated at 280 Ft-Lbs of torque stock (generally, they are considered under-rated too), conservatively guessing I've probably got 15-30% beyond that. For comparison, the 3400 is good for ~215 Ft-Lbs, the best stock 3500 is rated at just over 220 Ft Lbs, and even the L47 Northstar in my Teal Indy is "only" rated at 260 Ft-Lbs. The 282s simply aren't designed for that, but sadly, neither is the F40 six-speed I have, and that is the strongest GM FWD manual trans made to date I believe... With the mods done to the Z-26's 3.4 DOHC engine, I am concerned for its' 282 also... I do have a reman 284 here, but I really don't know how much stronger that thing is than a 282 -it will probably go in my Fiero GT someday with a more stock L67 3800SC. I don't really beat on my cars, but there are some times with them that I will use the power they have, nothing has flat-out broken on any of them from my mods yet either.

If you don't break them once in a while you're not driving them hard enough! Haha

Well, I am making sure that if I break something, it will be through pure overkill. Just picked-up a new engine for one of the older Plymouths -at least the lineage is within the same family: a Dodge 8.0L V-10. :D Cost was $235 and nearly my life -none of the yard's equipment was properly functional, and I had to move that beast by myself (actually, another yarder did assist in pushing the flat-tired cart the last half way to the loading gate, which helped tremendously!). Now I need to decide which transmission to put behind it -I have two here that will bolt to it, I'm not sure either one will survive the 450 ft-lbs this thing is rated at (at only 2400 RPMs! And stock, which this thing won't stay).

So... Another project lined up. :fool:

Correction -I just took a core engine-block back this week, a completely toasted L.O. 305. Total cost now, aside from the extra trip to the yard, is $151. I still find it.. wrong.. that a junk-yard charges a core fee -I mean seriously, they aren't going to rebuild it... They just gouge knowing that most people won't bother to return the old engine, and if they do then they are back at the yard and might spend more money... But it worked good for me too, I got some good Beretta parts this week for cheap. :good:

Core charge is usually to make up for the crushed weight.
