This memory came back to me the other day. I worked after school at a slot car track.
Remember those? I would fix the tracks, sweep the floors etc. Anyway, the owner my boss,
bought a brand new 1967 Shelby GT500 Mustang. That car was sweet.
He gave me a ride home in it one day. He didn't drive it hard but I could tell that thing was fast.
One cold fall day, he told me to go out to his GT500 and start taking the stripes
off the rocker panels. So out in the cold I was peeling off those stripes and using gasoline to try
and get any glue off that remained. I don't know why he didn't want the stripes on the car but he didn't.
The cold hurt my hands and I had gas on my skin for hours making the cold even worse.
But I got all the stripes off. Today, I'd know to use a heat gun and naphtha for the glue.
So looking back on that. If that car is still around, how much less is it worth without the factory stripes?!

As a matter of fact I do remember slot cars. Had the Star Wars set.

With the crazy prices for cars these days it would be like 10k off without the stripes(lol). Just because they were taken off.

Those stripes are readily available, not all that expensive, and it would be a miracle if the car still had original paint to begin with.
In valuation terms original paint cars are referred to as a survivor and that would be extremely unlikely.
And it doesn't "necessarily" add to their value.
In fact, depending on the condition, it may well detract from the appraised/market value of the vehicle.

And it just went down hill from there.

Star Wars didn't exist at this time. This was a storefront that had three large plywood tracks with eight lanes on each track. The slot car was about 1/25th scale. You brought your own car and controller. They ran off 12v so they had car batteries in the back that powered the lanes. I had to keep the batteries filled with water as part of my job.
They held races every Friday night with ribbons and prizes for the winners. You bought track time in 1/2 hour increments to practice. We used to use STP as a tire dressing on spongy tires to help keep the car from fishtailing.
These days they have RC cars but I've heard of some slot car tracks opening up again.

You had some nice cars. So you never got another new car?
My first new car was a 77 Buick Le-sabre sport coupe. The chrome wheels would get rusty in the rain and the transmission gave out at 27K miles. It was one of the first TH200s.
My 2nd new car is my 87 Grand National which I still have. Power antenna didn't work and the dealer dented the hood
while repairing it.
But overall, I find the new car experience is over rated. You pay all that money and there are still issues to be sorted out. My wife had bought a new 73 Camaro 350 4 speed and at the dealer for warranty work, one of the guys thought
he was in reverse and popped the clutch and ran it into a bench. So then the body shop had to fix it.

New cars?

My God where do I start? (Not counting Company Cars.)

'71 Vega GT, '72 Nova SS, '74 Duster 360, '76 Grand Prix, '77 Comet GT, and then the parade of neat/not new stuff when I got the Mopar Bug. '69 Dart Swinger (Car Craft feature car), '67 Barracuda 383, '68 Barracuda 340, '71 Dodge Demon 340, '70 Cuda 440 6-pack, then I got married again.

All in I think I have owned 27 cars but that may be +/- a couple.

Hell I have had 6 Berettas in various capacities. The '92 the only new one.

I grew up in the 60's and 70's. You youngins missed all the good stuff! (And it wasn't just all about cars, LOL!!)

I do enjoy the music, have a collection of vinyl !

Yeah it's nuts how fast the new slots are. Yes I know the Star Wars was ten years away, but that was my first and only set. Even back then everyone had something better than I did. Should have learned from that.
