My 3.1L is slow??

After several months of busting butt on my now-beloved '93 GT 3.1L 3spd auto, I had finally got it driveable. My wife was just about as excited as I was to drive it.

We both had base 2.2l autos years ago before we met, and we both loved 'em.

So I'm thinkin "oh man she's really gonna like this one since its a v6!"

So she was all excited, we run up the road and get on the highway, and after a few minutes she says "this is kinda slow compared to my Durango."

Why does this hurt my feelings? Lol after that I got all defensive.

I guess there is something to be said for modern technology. Well not too modern, its a 2000. I have never owned a Mopar, this one is a stepchild of our relationship. It has a 4.7L V8, OHC.

Whatever, my Beretta rocks!

I like the way you guys think. This weekend we got the a/c working, and I kinda have to agree with her, it is slow (only with the a/c on of course!)

Is the passenger weight not helping the late 1980s early 1990s vehicles performance?

3.1s make great low end torque, but don't make any real power above 4k rpms. They can be made to make power but its far easier and cheaper just to swap it out

I agree, and this one is no exception. Heck I rarely take it 3k let alone 4k. Around town you can keep it under 2k and get up to 45mph easily without holding up traffic.

Your post is dead on as to why she thought this. She is used to the high rpm and constant shifting of the ohc V8, totally different animal. I'll take the torque any day.

Add in some 1.6 Rockers, 2.5" exhaust, WAI, and UDP. It'll wake it up a little and no tuckNrolling will be a huge need.

I used to think the same thing, car felt slow for a v6, so at the time I turbocharged it and that made it way better. lol

Gt u should try putting in set of 1.6 rockers from early 3100 in the turbo car and it'll wake it up even more

That's neat, I didn't know that was an option.
I'll mention it to whoever buys the turbo Indy.

I will see about trying it with my 94 sunbird. It has the 3.1 LHO and it might help a little bit together with a tune.

More of a cruiser than a hot rod, at least stock.
