haha we went similar routes with upgrading.

i found a QX9650 for a good price so i swapped that in and sold the E8600. upgraded my video card to an MSI gtx 460 from an 8800gts. and i stole the other 4gb of ram (same kit) from my other computer to bring it up to 8gb total.

Yeah but I kept the board processor combo for maybe a week before not being happy with it... My main goal in this was to replace my 780i board since it knew it would be somewhat of a bottle neck for the 460's and it had been giving me some HD recognizing issues(not really hot swap compatable) and two of my fan heders stopped working so I went with a Ebay 790i Ultra and that just presented itself with many issues, I could not control the CPU core voltage properly and it would not select the right voltage on auto, just messed up... so for the meantime I kept the Quad in the 780i but with how much trouble I was having getting that all stable Amy said just upgrade to what I want so it will work properly, so now I've blown away the 780i setup... lol

Anyone want a EVGA 780i mobo or a E8400, or a Q9650, 8gb OCZ SLI ram, Patriot DDR3 1600 8GB kit? Will already has claim on the dual 9800GT's

i got the quad as a temp upgrade to hold me over till spring time. it didn't solve all my needs but doubling the ram allowed me to do some things that were a little tough with 4gb. good thing i bought the same kit for the two computers.

the E8600 was easy to overclock but when it came to the quad it threw a whole new batch of problems and was more sensitive to voltage changes than a highly emotional woman.

i'd ebay the amd board but it's not worth it.
throw the E8400 up on ebay. i got $120 for my E8600. turns out people still pay a lot for legacy hardware.

i might just throw what i'm using now into a htpc when i get new stuff. run the quad at stock and cooling should be minimal.

EDIT
just ran futuremark vantage got 16129 wonder how much of an impact having the graphics card at X8 instead of X16 made. the crappy thing with this P45 board is that when you have to gpu's in there it runs them both at X8. guess that's the price i gotta pay to run more than 2 displays. was playing around with grabbing a pci graphics card but i don't know.

I think I have you beat a bit there... Main system has been the same for nearly 9years now. Intel Prescott 3.0/1MB/800/HT O/Ced to 3.6 with an FSB of approx 966. Has 2GB of DDR400. Currently has an AGP version of the Radeon 3850HD with 512mb. 4 * 250GB IDE 133 Hitachi drives running a RAID 0+1 for 500 GB. It does have over 4TB of external storage though. Only thing it can't do, is play HD @ 1080, due to CPU bottlenecking. LOL

When I built it, the motherboard, CPU and RAM cost me over 600 bucks back in 2002 I think it was and was pretty top notch for then.

Soon I plan to finally build a replacement. I had built one, but ended up selling that one.

$788.95 Recently for the bare bones minus the video and PS since I got that stuff in Dec, I'd have to go back through the receipts since I bought a x58 EVGA board with an i7 950 and realized that was Gen1 i3/i5/i7 so I returned those parts and ram and got this board which is socket 1155 and got the gen2 i5 processor, and the board also supports gen3 when it comes out.

One problem so far... SLI bridge included doesn't seem to be working... I may have to dig out my flexible one if I can find it. (edit) manual says I need drivers 270.81 or newer, I was running 266.58 since that worked better on the 780i for 3dmark score. Updating now to see if that fixes it. All better... helps to have compatible drivers... lol

Board $269.99
Ram $139.99
Processor 219.99
Cooler $98.99
Case $59.99

And I got the GTX460's off ebay for ~250 for the pair, and also picked up the ps when I got those, that was $129.99

I dug out my old 2.1ghz Thinkpad X61's made 1 machine from the 2 broken. flashed the bios and installed a SATA 2 SSD drive. I only have 3Gb of RAM. With the larger battery, and now with Win7, SSD i am amazed with the power use of this. The SSD drive made a difference. I do not have the gaming power of any of the machines you guys assembled. I do love the SSD drive! And I was able to get this old dog to run SATA2.

lol i'm really cheap, but wanted a decent setup that i would not have to touch for 5 or more years. i dont do any gaming really, but watch a fair amount of videos, dont download a lot of movies (yet... just got rid of cable), and havent used it a lot on my 50" DLP tv yet, but sometimes. it's connected with hdmi cable running off the onboard video, and on a secondary ati radeon hd4850 that i picked up used, i run a 26" toshiba lcd as my main monitor with a dvi-hdmi cable.

we built the compu with the help of newegg (boxing day sales 2010) and my sis boyfriend (who has a watercooled gaming rig, which he very rarely ever shuts off...). it consists of an Antec 300 case (i like the clean simple looks, was hoping it was smaller actually), a Gigabyte 880gm-usb3 mboard (onboard radeon hd 4250), teamed with a 3 core (was hoping for a functional 4th core... but cant complain) AMD Athlon-II X3-445 AM3 Processor `Rana`chip, 2x 2gig Geil value ram, WD (caviar i think?)320 gb sata hd partitioned a few times, and also an older WD 120gb ata for more internal luggage, an older LG dvd burner, and older cooldrive 6 holds the old hd aswell. this setup was just under $500 all in (aside from the 2nd hd and dvd drive), and works great for anything i throw at it. i also have a WD my book essential 1Tb usb 3.0 external drive (loads a bit quicker through the usb3 port on the mboard), for back up and movies. i network share that with a Netgear WNR3500l router, although the hd is currently off line because i have some renters in my house i share internet with right now... we just got Netflix and are just starting to do more `internet tv` stuff.

although i'm not huge on computers, i have messed around in previous years with many used parts. just upgraded 2 christmas ago from an Athlon xp 1.7 (with AGP! lol).
