I wanted the quietest straight-thru system I could put together so I wont skyline myself in front of The Man. I checked out what the DSM guys where doing and ended up making a copy of one of thier systems.
It was a 2.5" mandrel bend kit, I cut and welded up the pieces myself. Where the Cat is supposed to go, I made it so it will unbolt and allow me to bolt in a legal cat if I ever have to. In the mean time, I run a 4.5" x 6.75" Oval Body, 10" Long Resonator in place of the cat, and then fairly large straight-thru muffler (so it will have maximum sound absorbtion qualities), and finally a resonator tip. Both resonator and muffler are made by Vibrant.
Resonator PN - 1141
Muffler PN - 1102
Im very happy with how quiet it is and how smooth it is.

Thats a nice clean looking setup you got.. im going to take my 88 in shortly to get 2 1/2 put on from the cat back, and will do the cat to engine when i get my turbo engine built. the pipe from cat to the back now is the original and starting to rust where the hangers are i got it cobbled with weld right now to seal it up but getting to the point it just needs some new pipe now. Im thinking 2 1/2 should be sufficient.

2-1/2 is techincally sufficient for 700hp, although you do stand to gain a couple 10HP or so by switching to 3" at around the 500hp mark. While there is a small gain to be had, that alone is not worth the additional cost. I think 2-1/2" is good for pretty much anything we are ever gonna do. It should be hard to outgrow it

I've got a Jones maxflow SS muffler (2" inlet/outlet). I had to redo the entire exhaust but decided to stick with the stock 2.0" walker setup as there are no exhaust shops in town anymore. I might upgrade to 2.25" or whatever TwinZ's exhaust size is.
Anyway, haven't heard how it sounds yet on the car, but they sound like a racey Magnaflow, but nicer. I used to be all about Magnaflow, but for 1/3 of the price and better sound I will go with Jones Maxflow SS.

I went to the muffler shop and said "it has a hole in it and I need a new one". Well, they put one in alright. I should have checked it out before I left. It sure is quiet, but dang is it small! Like a 14" muffler on there! Doesn't even fill out the space left from the last one. I guess it would be just a generic installer muffler? I went to Autozone and snatched up a Walker Sound FX muffler that I will install later on.

I changed mine. Now a Thrush Turbo. Too quiet. Like, silent in the car. Sounds niceish outside at idle though.

This topic has been around for a while, but I figured I'd post some exhaust videos for others to help decide. All are on a 1994 model. As a heads up, some of these videos are ancient!
3100, custom intake, stock manifolds, no converter or resonator, 2.5" pipe with Magnaflow style "tuner" muffler.

3100, custom intake, stock manifolds, no converter or resonator, 2.5" pipe with Flowmaster Super 44 and Hooker resonated tip.

3400, custom intake, Pacesetter headers, Comp Cams street cam with .480 lift and bad temp sensor (why it wouldn't idle smooth). Open headers. Shawn don't turn your speakers up again! Haha...

3400, custom intake, Pacesetter headers, no converter or resonator, 2.5" pipe with Magnaflow round muffler and Hooker resonated tip.

And just for fun... dad's 1991 Cavalier, bone stock 2.2 with the exhaust broken in half after the converter, haha.

The stock exhaust is much too quiet for my liking so I had a local shop bend, weld, and hang a new one for me: Stock downpipe, 2.5" pipe from the "90 degree" bend back, MagnaFlow Cat [1], 12” Long Dynamax Bullet [2], Borla ProXS muffler [3], Flowmaster 3" Polished Stainless Steel Dual Angle Cut Tip [4].
