a friend of mine has a 97 dodge intrepid with a 3.0L engine, he cut the muffler off but left the cat and it sounds damm good... i was wondering if anyone has done this with a 3.1L ?  i was thinking maybe cutting mine off to see how it sounded but i'd hate to have to go thru all the work if it only sounds like crap

Don't straight pipe a 3.1 it sounds like crap. It's loud but it honestly sounds like you have a huge hole in a muffler. Buy a muffler that gives it some tone, like a Borla, or dynomax or something. Straight piped 3.1s are reckneckish.

I've had pipes disconnect before the muffler on both the GT with a 2.8 and the Z26 with the 3100, it was loud, but it was also ugly. Not a pleasant rumble, more like an "oh my god please stop staring at my car" rumble.

Get a Borla turbo. May cost over $100 but you'll LOVE the sound it will make on your 3.1 and it's stainless so it will last a good amount fo time.

I haven't taken the muffler off my Z26 yet, but I'm going to agree that a straight pipe might not be a good idea.  I would expect the exhaust without a muffler to have that loud popping/chattering noise most modern cars have.  Your friend has a Dodge vehicle with a Dodge Motor, every engine has its own voice.  For example, no engine makes that sweet sound that a 6 cylinder flathead motor with a straight pipe will make.

My z26 has a blown muffler, was rotted on one side (fixed with insta-steel puddy) and the seam on the opposite side is blown.  The car has a nice idle sound, and a nice sound if you dig into the gas pedal, but general driving makes me kind of embarrassed.  I have no popping/chattering noise though, and I've tended to drive by digging into the gas from take off and letting it go once I reached the speed I want, and let it idle again.  Only way to make it sound nice.

Oh well then on the 3100 I have a Borla Turbo and even with the resonator taken off you can't even hear it. Still don't straight pipe it. For a 3100 I wouldn't buy anything more expensive than a glasspack for some sound but that's just me.

hatemyauto... i've been told the 3.1 and 3100 engines have completely different sounds and i know this from the 5.0 ford and 5.0 gm engines, they are very distinctive even with straight pipes, as for the borla turbo... i was really interested in the flowtech terminator... i've been told by a very reliable source that it sounds incredible on the 3100s does any know to back this up?

I had a celebrity and the muffler fell off... due to the awesome lopey idle due to a bad missfire it sounded like a V8 with a big cam in that could barely idle... ha

It was cool for the first 2 minutes then... it just sucked because my ears would be ringing after a drive on the highway at 65mph.

just get a nice flowing muffler and an exhaust cutout installed where the pipe bends around the driver side when it wraps around the gastank... makes a very nice sound
