muffler

3.1 v6.
Where is the most efficient mounting location for a muffler to not lose performance. No cat on it and the pipe dumps right behind the drivers seat:
*closer to the exhaust manifolds?
*closer to the end of the exhaust pipe?
*somewhere in the middle?
*doesn't matter

the shorter the pipe the lower the back pressure the higher the horsepower but torque suffers. I know that a certain amount of back pressure is required for scavenging, but I don't know any of the formulas or what not to figure it out, search Google, there has got to be some place where you can find the info.

usually is closer to the end but if its a staight through muffler it makes less difference.
