I bought a Beretta recently but I have had some problems. Over heating was caused by the fan not turning on, so I routed it directly to the battery and it still works. I failed emissions and the check engine light is on constantly. I've been doing some research and most signs point to my ECM. Now, obviously, them's is expensive, so I wanted to know: Is it in fact my ECM? And if so: Can I perform other actions to reset or reprogram it before resorting to total replacement?

Have you pulled the trouble codes from the ECM???

I have never had an ECM fail that would even run the car. I've had two dead ECMs, and both killed the engine instantly like turning off a swtich. Attempted restart would just crank the starter without a hint of refiring.

I agree with Woody in that it is very unlikely to be the ECM.

Hell re-wiring the fan could trigger an engine light. It often doesn't take much.

Check the codes with a paper clip and go from there.

FWIW- My '7730 would cut out with any throttle input (idle was fine). I would reach over, tap on the ECM and it would be back to normal for a while. So they can fail and still run.
