93 GT power windows

Post by neech »

so here's the problem guys...last summer my power windows would both stop working whenever they felt like it, then randomly start working again. i checked every wire, checked and cleaned the switch, even tried an older switch from an 88 gt with the same results....well eventually the passenger window motor completely died, so i replaced both the passenger side window motor and the driver's side window motor just this past fall. The problem ceased after that, and the windows worked perfectly, right up until 2 days ago when my driver's window got stuck half down, and sure enough, just like in the summer, neither window worked, then suddenly 5 minutes later they work fine again, and have been fine since. Does anyone have any clue what the heck is going on here? I'd really like to permanently fix this problem!

inside the window motor, there is a circuit breaker/overload type device.
These fail. They begin to open the circuit on less than normal amps.
Ever notice they go down better than they go up?
If you pull up on the window while some one hits the switch,
you may be able to get the window up.
On the bottom of the motor is a hole. If you get a screw the right size,
you can screw it into the hole and attach a wire to there bypassing the circuit breaker.
(There is a metal band inside used for testing the motor.)
If you probe that hole with and ohm meter, find the same wire that come into the motor.
I.E. zero ohms in the hole and one of the two wires that come to the motor.
Then you attach that wire through a fuse or another circuit breaker and then
splice it to the same wire coming to the motor.
Now you have bypassed the bad circuit breaker in the motor.
Or you have to get new motors.
Some fail some don't. My 93 van drivers side failed. My 94 it was the passenger side.
You may be able to find more info over on the Turbo Regal websites.
It is a question often asked.
