Achieva scx w-41 help

Post by 1990BerettaGTZ2.3L »

So on craigslist there is a 92 achieva scx for sale with a new w-41 crate motor in it, the guy say that it runs rich and shuts off. I wanna drive this car home but I was wondering what would cause this so I can fix it and drive it home for $1000!!!. Possibly bad egr not sure if it would get so bad to crap the car down though I really want this car so I hope someone has had this problem at one point or another thanks Ryan.

You're talking about Andrew Morgan's car. If it was drivable, he'd be driving it. He's going to school in Ohio for Automotive and he can't figure out what's wrong with it. He's changed a few parts already and thinks it may have jumped time. It will need to be towed!!! He can't afford to fix it and he's not allowed to work on it at his apartment.

Also, Quad 4's do NOT have an EGR! So you can throw that theory out the window, lol

We have all tried to help him out on the quad 4 forum and quad 4 facebook groups to no avail. Good luck!

Ok well looks like I'm gonna have to get my truck running for a 5 hour drive one way, unless I can buy a trailer hitch for my firebird

What did he replace on it? Running rich and stalling on my quads was one the O2 sensor and the other time was the Fuel pressure regulator.

Pefully I can get a trailer hitch put on my firebird before he sells it my frame rails are nice so hopefully it can handle pulling a 3,000 lb car pullin a car dolly it's one of my most reliable cars I've ever owned even though I replaced the head gaskets once only to have the motor lock up when the guy finished, so he put another one in that was sopposedly an insurance job..WRONG... Bought new head gaskets and intake and told him to put them in guess what never got done but motor had a bad crank and rod so I had another buddy that's good with these firebirds put that crap in and a set of arp rod and head studs in it and haven't had a problem yet other than overheating all the time, so I trust it most to do this, plus gets good gas mileage

3000lbs is a lot of weight to be towing with a Firebird...let alone a V6.

Your auto would need a huge transmission cooler, first of all. I would want other modifications done but that depends on what the age of the transmission is. Mostly the vette or aftermarket servo upgrade and a shift kit.

Overall though, I would look at what the hitch is rated for...if the weight is exceeded or close to it, then don't do it and get your K10 going. The SM465 can be run bone dry and still get you home, plus the granny gear will get the load moving better...even if it's overkill. it's safer :D

I'll probably just have to do that ;) speaking of dry it's been for 3 months lol it leaks it all out cause there is a hairline crack on the bottom side of my case I have another out back with an np205 coarse spline it's outta a 78 custom deluxe 1 owner trucked I stripped and scrapped, 3rd gear is making a bad grinding noise I the guy told me he had a transmission guy look at it and I guess they have a pin on them that comes loose or breaks off or something, I wanna fix it cause it's such a tight nice shifting tranny but I heard they are a bitch to rebuild

I don't know much about the SM465, personally. I just read a lot about how they are one of the strongest you could get. Even the NV4500 isn't as bulletproof, it's advantage is true OD.

The SM465/205 combo is about as stout as you can get from stock parts. The killer is the coarse spline (10-spline IIRC) but if you got to haul the trans apart, you might as well keep an eye out for higher spline count input, output shafts and t-case input to match up correctly...then you would have the stoutest possible drivetrain from OEM parts.

Personally I prefer course spline they are way tougher that a fine spline, I'm gonna start searching for another sm465 in nice shape that's a 205 bolt up so I can throw them up in or go balls to the wall with a nv4500 swap then I could do highway runs all the time, as soon as a put another motor I have for it in and get a matching front to the rear ratio, I got sick of goin through 1/2 rears with 35s so I put a 14 bolt FF with 3:73s thank god it's not a factory posi cause they are bombs

Anyway................... Enough truck talk, I thought this thread was about buying an SCX! You're making plans on how to go pick it up, but have you even contacted the seller yet?
