Rebuilding the 3.1L

Postby Guest » Tue Nov 01, 2005 7:22 pm

i want to rebuild the 3.1L on my beretta. I have two 3.1's right now, i have one in my daily driver, and the other in a beretta in my back yard. I am going to rebuild the 3.1L, without buying a 3400, i dont want a 3400. I plan on boring the motor out to maybe a 3.4.

What do you guys recomend me to do do the 3.1L for maximum performance? Should i get 3400 heads or should i just get my heads sized to fit my bored motor?

thanks

Rebuilding the 3.1L

The most a 3.1 can be sized to is a 3.2L with overbored replacement pistons. '00 and up year 3100 and 3400 top end is recomended since they are the big bore intake manafolds. Heads don't need any mods to fit any bore size within the 60d engine family (2.8,3.1, 3100,3400). IF you can't get your hands on a cheap '00+ top end..then any 3*00 top end after 95 will do since they have roller rockers.
You'll need costom made pushrods for the top end swap.
The Crane 260-2 cam is a good repalcement performance cam for fuel injected engines. The 272 is good for 5spds.
Costom headers will be verry helpful...even for your 3.1 stock stuff.

A CAI will do wonders. YOU WON"T LOSE LOW end power with CAI..with some chip tunning since that meneans there needs to be more fuel and timming due to better breathing.

If you want to be radical..use repalcemnt pistons made for a Camaro or Firebird 3.1l. The static compression ratio will sky rocket and you can use the 272 cam and have some ponies to gallop. The top end power will be awsome.

With a 3400 engine...you'll still need to buy the gasket set since you can't trust that lower intake manifold gasket and engine seals. Replacing the oil pump and bearings is cheap insurance. Might want to replace the torque converter seal on the tranny or input shaft seal on 5spds since your at it.

You know another thing you could always try is do what Curtis Walker has done, use Iron Heads and a 3.4 Camaro intake I believe it is.  Yeah it is a bit extreme but last I remember hearing that engine breaths and can make power upwards and beyond 8000 RPM....
Hybrids can be rather run :;):

No prob on the :( haha, I'll try to help....

No, you won't need 3400 headers with a top end, get 3400 exhaust manifolds....
How much from 3400 headers?  Dunno 17 HP? 20 HP? Dunno, I think there are what maybe 2-3 Beretta 3400s with headers?  Not sure, check 60*V6 for that, they are the crazy guys not there....
How much from 3400 Top end, crane cam, Intake, FFP Pulley, and TB? Hmm, well, a 3400 will have the base 170HP? Hell I don't remember, somewhere around there, the cam well depends on the specs and supporting breathing mods for the HP from it.  Anywhere from 20-30-40-50 HP? Who knows, its so hard to tell.  You can add the seperate things up, Headers 20 HP, Top end 3400 vs. 3.x, 20 HP? Cam, 15? 30? 40?, intake, 2-3HP, FFP 8 HP, TB, 1? HP, so there maybe 55?  85? 100? :suspect  ??? who knows?

Rebuilding the 3.1L

A basic 3400 swap will put a beretta in the mid or low 15s auto or low 14s mid 14s 5spd. A hybrid 3.1 will do about the same. A 3100 could do the same..but you'd have to swich over to flat tapp performance cam if you don't want to spend $300+ on a roller performance cam. With other supporting mods mentioned..you could be in the high 13s.

a hybrid 3.1l is a 3.1L that has 3400 parts right? People have told me that i can only bore to 3.2, is this true? And if i go to a 3.2 with 3400 heads and intake and plenum, will i get the same benefits if i go to a 3400 swap?

the question that i asked about the headers was because i was not sure if i could use the 3400 headers with a 3.1 block, kinda a dumb question o well.

thanks
