yes another 3400 ?

Post by wht96 »

ok guys i have a 96 basewhich is OBII. now i have a few questions about the 3400.  this temp sensor debate, im not going to tap the head on the new engine, and if im not mistaken then i have to splice??? now at least thats what im getting from someone who did the swap on a 95 beretta. anything differant for the 96?? on 3400swap.com it says into a newer car is easier. any steps i can skip since this is a obII car? and injectors what exactly is the differance that i have to use my old one? i know this has been asked 1000 times but would it be easier to use the computer from the donor car? i dont need a step by step explination i am mechanically inclined just never messed with these cars much.

oh any 3400's better to look for better hp tq numbers for instance??

The new injectors I believe are multec2 or something different that doesn't interface right with the computer (ohms are different or something) and I think the flow is off from what the stock computer is tuned for. The temp sensor, bascailly the engine temp sensor on the 3400 has 3 wires, an extra wire for your gauge since they got rid of the extra sensor for the gauge and combined it. check the 3400swap.com .pdf it shows how to put on a new connector and what wires for what. It's easy. No it would not be easier to use the computer from the other car since it will have stuff that's not on your car and can cause headaches. I'm not even sure it will interface depending on how new it is since they use some new computer bus type system for the whole cars now.

All 3400's should put out about equal power, but they differ a little in the vans by a 5 or so horsepower and I heard that's due to free-er flowing exhaust so nothing motor wise is much different. I'd get a new low mileage engine. BTW there is one on ebay right now for only 150 or buy it now 450. You may need a different upper intake manifold to hook your EGR up to it, since they chagned mounting styles, but I also heard that you can use the newer egr on the motor, if it's the same plug/connector type.

The plus side is you have a 96 with ODBII so you can get a DHP powertuner to edit your computer and tune it. Perfect for adding boost later and tuning it to run on large injectors/etc. Or just tuning it to get it perfect, or tuning it with a hot cam/etc.

Hope that helps.

you need a 2000+ upper intake for the egr and the corresponding egr valve

I was thinking it was opposite, that a 96-99 3400 (from like the vans) would have the right egr mount, and later they changed it to a horizontal mount or something. But the EGR might still work with the computer, not sure if the type of EGR changed or just how it mounts..

I know 2000+ they changed the egr mounting style. If you get an upper from a 96-99 3400 (like from a van) then your EGR will mount up just fine. I'm not positive on the new 2000+ but I know you'd have to use the egr that comes with it because it attaches differently. Wether (sp?) or not it's the same style and works with your wiring is yet to be determined by me.

BTW the 2000+ Upper has a different (better) flow distrubution. Where the older ones did not and there was not equal flow to all ports.

1. 96 EGR plugs in from any year 3400 use the 3400 egr
2. use the 3100 stock coolant temp sensor no wiring change
3. use stock 3100 injectors

You'll also want to use your 3100 FPR. And keep the 3400 cam position sensor in there, as the camshaft changed and you'll need the same sensor to read the signal. If the connectors are different you'll have to adapt them, but you must use the cam sensor from the motor you are swaping to.

Steph: are you saying 96 L-bodies had the 3 wire ECT sensor already?

FPR doesnt matter,
cam sensor doesnt matter only difference is length of wire
96 beretta/corsica already have 3 wire coolant sensor.

Why not? Wouldn't that affect a/f ratio at idle/cruise or can the computer compensate for up to 16psi difference at idle?!!! I know at WOT I believe the computer does not adjust IIRC it just opens up the injectors and fires away without monitoring it so close. (not sure if it even reads the o2 at WOT).
