95 Beretta Base I4 and Manual, Make it a Turbo?

Post by GT_Indy »

I'm interested in taking a Base 2.2L I4 Beretta 1995, with a manual, and making it a Turbo I4.

I know that I'd have to go with a turbo cam, forged bottom end, forged rods, stronger springs.
Bigger injectors, probably 35 lb? and possibly a fuel pump.

I'm thinking 3 Bar MAP, and would be fun to run something like 20-25 PSI boost.

What are your thoughts?
To me it may cost and be expensive, but I think it would be fun.

I'm just not sure about the OBD1.5 ECM. Who would even tune that?

I don't believe the 95 2.2L cam with the same ECM's as the 95 3.1L's. You may have a standard removable prom ECM. Might want to check that first.

Ok, I'll have to find out.
If it comes with the standard removable prom that would make it easier.

Okay, after some time, I found some references.

Here is a list of GM ECM's:
http://www.exatorq.com/ludis_obd1/p4xref.html#16191947

From what I could find, the 1995 Beretta with the 4 cylinder and manual used the LN2 2.2L I4 engine.
According to that site, it is the 16191947 GM ECM.

Google image search:
https://www.google.com/search?q=1995+be ... Ma8dHsM%3A

Looks like it is an OBD1 prom style ECM.

I am unable to take the car apart to verify, its a family members car. However This is what I found.

Maybe it can work with Code59? I don't know if they have anything for a 4 cylinder, I'd have to look into it.
If they have something to work with a turbo 2.2 I4, then I will totally look into buying all brand new forged parts and building this engine from the block up.

The '95 does use an OBD-1 removable eprom chip. Even with tuning, I'm sure your options are really limited. Best bet if you're already putting money into blueprinting and building the motor is to get a MAF and switch over to a standalone management system. I'm sure it'll give you more flexibility and versatility with the required tuning.

I know chevycavalierworld used to offer obd 1 and 1.5 tuning services for the L4 awhile back but now it looks like they deal exclusively with 97+ OBDII. You can always give them a call to see if they still offer it:

Otherwise, another option is to convert your harness and ecu to a gm obdII for the L4 (ala sunfire/cavy).
Turbo 2.2s have been done.
