GM Transmission mount provision for upper PS motor mount

Post by keiffith »

instead of pollyfilling my old shitty mount, i modified the factory mount cage and built a platform inside of it to mount a energy suspension gm tranny mount. took maybe 3 hours to build. if you do this, you will have to wallow out the holes in the engine bracket for the bolts to line up, but this mount is much more solid than even a new factory mount, its actualy starting to cause the lower mounts to get worn out, so im going to have to fix that problem soon too.

Or you could have gotten the poly insert that goes around the factory 92-96 mount.

But looks good regardless.

The only downfall I see to this is you've made the vibration absorption much less... With the poly insert you still have the rubber isolating the vibrations so you don't feel it as much, when you eliminate that and replace the whole mount with a 100% poly item you bring more vibrations into the cabin.

My experience is that it works only with the newer style (95+)

Older ones, it just slides up since there is nothing holding it down.

3X00-Modified, Also, stock mounts are liquid filled that do a great deal of reducing vibrations.. Mine changed dramatically when I replaced the liquid with glue.

honestly i only noticed a slight increase in vibration. i prefer solid poly over the liquid filled.

Good work on that, I wouldn't have done it that way, but I ended up just grabbing the poly insert and installing that (:P)

it was cheap to do and didnt take long, and because its a common part, when it goes bad it will be much easier to locate years down the road.

I actually used the "insert" mount on my 92, and then filled the rest of the mount with 94A Shore Poly. Worked like a charm (all mounts filled and NO engine movement) and still had minimal vibration in the cabin (felt a bit more like a racecar, but still very streetable.)

i knew of plenty of people used more stiff poly instead of the gel back in the day.

I didn't notice any abnormal amount of vibration, but because i replaced the top mount the lower mounts are taking more strain and need replaced.

This is still a Poly mount, but if the poly fails, the internal steel has "teeth" that engage each other, preventing any further damage.

My GTU's 3800 is hard-mounted into the car -no Poly, no gel, no liquid, etc. Needless to say, I have near zero engine movement inside the bay. The 3800 S-II I have utilizes a counter-balance shaft in the lifter-valley underneath the intake manifold, and despite the displacement increase, that 90-degree 'dinosaur' is exceptionally smooth. The vibration is definitely there though, but is something I can live with. I can't see that a mount like yours would be as bad as my car, even on a 60-degree six. It looks like a good, straight-forward install procedure, and using common off-the-shelf parts for this deserves a big thumbs-up. :good: Nice job! Thanks for the pics.
