IAC is causing the surging idle.

Car is going into the shop tomorrow. It has been leaking coolant for months, but just recently started to not throw heat. It's not all the time however. Sometimes it will throw heat just fine, and stay at normal operating temp, but other times the temp will rise quickly, and it will not throw heat. Coolant level is always topped off before driving. Throw some ideas at me, so I have an idea of what to expect. I suspect the thermostat is sticking. Could that cause it to leak?

I dont think it would cause it to leak and if its not showing on the ground my bet would be heater core

The coolant by-pass tube is for getting heat when the thermostat is closed.

It is "showing on the ground", thats how I know it's leaking. Today when I started it, it started pissing coolant out while it was running. That was the first time I ever noticed it leaking while running. Usually it'll take a while after it's off to start leaking. It's leaking out, and it ends up on the ground on the passenger side of the car, just to the inside of the wheel. I can't see where it's leaking from however. It also did not throw any heat on the way to the shop, but the temp would rise to half on the gauge, and the fan would kick and bring it down to a quarter. This was like a 7 mile trip from home to the shop, got all lights green, so it was not stop and go. The temp just seems to rise for no reason. Oh well, it's getting looked at now, I'll update when I find more out.

sounds like the line to or from your heater core has rotted/burst. you'll be overheating due to air bubbles in the system from filling it back up so often (depending how low it actually gets...), and not bleeding the system

4th one's a charm, 5th one is, beginnning to sound like this is an addiction...

I've had my eye on something for quite a while now. Not gonna get too far ahead of myself just yet, lets see what happens first.

It's fixed! Not leaking any more! Timing chain cover and gasket, belt tensioner, and serpetine belt replaced. It's got heat, and the temp gauge has not gone past a quarter. I also had the dexcool garbage flushed out and replaced with normal coolant as recomended.

Last I remember the default is "on". That means that it will be purging all the time. That could have effect on the idle.
