New poly front motor mount for my GTZ!

Post by Godlike »

I finally decided to do something about my front mount. I found a few companies selling aftermarket mounts made for the Audi S4 with close enough dimensions. They are 7mm taller than my stock one is now but I know they can squash down some over time. I milled 3mm off one of them (I had to buy 2) and Ill fit test it tomorrow and see how flat it sits on the cross member.
Ive also bored out the top stem holes to 12mm and replaced the bottom one with 2 offset 10mm bolts. more pics to come...

Hopefully I will be road testing this at Bfest.

Not cheap. lol, about $230 for the pair. But I think it will be worth it. Not really a bad price. I spent $250 on 3 mounts for my 3rd gen Integra.
I really don't see any weak links with these now that I have larger bolts in them. The inserts are replaceable and come in 2 levels of firmness. I machined both mounts so hopefully Ill sell the other one. stay tuned...

You say it's not cheap... But getting a new GM one will set you back $350.

Quads are a different breed mount-wise.

ya, 90-91 was the unfortunate version
Had some slow nights at work and got the machining done on both mounts. Originally they had one m8-1.5 bolt top and bottom. I chose to copy GM and bore the top to accommodate M12-1.75 which allows a snug factory fit in the stock bracket and I can use the original nut if I want. I ran dual M10-1.5s in the bottom same as the stock mount but had to narrow up the pattern and clock it 90 degrees off.

Modified mounts bored and slotted to accommodate new hardware.

Fit test looks good. Some drilling required on the quad cross member. One hole for a guide pin on the new mount base, then I marked and drilled the 2 bolt holes. There is a 3rd center hole on the cross member that I could have used to eliminate the need for drilling but oh well. In this case overkill is good. I milled 5mm total off the top stems to match the 95mm stock mount height.

These new units are available in Low"street" and medium"race" durometer polyurethane. They are as advertised fully serviceable and the sales rep told me I can order either grade poly inserts for about $30. I ordered these in "street" firmness mainly because the race ones are on back order for at least a few weeks. I probably will try the race inserts out eventually. Ill be installing this tomorrow but I still have to put a bunch of things back together before I can even fire it up.

Yep, trying to keep the Quad from climbing out of the engine bay.

ya, I remember that moment in history. Probably because he still complains about it. But now the limiting factor is the sheer strength of the bolts and mount threads. I will probably cable it before I take it to the track.

Anyways the mount is in! Got the car together yesterday. It idles like stock. There are no new interior vibrations, I don't even feel "buzzing" on the peddles or shifter. There is still limited engine movement but much less than before so the let out in 1st and 2nd is much better. Before it really felt like my front mount was completely trashed again but when I took it out it actually shows no signs of stress. Im thinking my high mileage trans mounts need to be replaced still but it feels like this mount is really masking that problem. Did a few burnouts in the driveway on 17s and it seems to cut down on wheel hop significantly as well.
My only gripe is its too smooth for this car. Theres nothing mellow about driving this car so why start now?
I think the med durometer poly will suite this car better with its trips to the drag strip and whatnot.

Looks good Brad. We need to get this car to the dragstrip with a 75 shot soon!
