93 3.1 MPFI ---> 3400/3500

Post by DanteGTZ »

Being I'm a Quad4 guy, I've really not researched the 3400/3500 swaps much. To those going from a 90-93 3.1 Multiport to a newer 3400/3500, what all is required? Are the mounts the same? Keep the MPFI computer or do I need to swap to the newer one?

The car is already a 5speed car, so I'm assuming everything would stay the same on the trans side?

Thanks guys,

92-93 has different mounts than the 90-91 MPFI motors...

If it's a 93 as your title suggests... Then you can just follow the basic 3100 to 3400 swap rules when it comes to the timing cover motor mount, May require milling off an unused belt idler boss to clear the factory mount, re-using bolts from the 3.1 or a 3100 engine to secure it and then just bolting the lower dog bone mount on. Now regarding the rear axle shaft if its a 3500 you will have to make a new support if you have the tail coming off the trans, if you have the long axle you don't need to obviously, the boss's on the back of the 3500 block do not match where the 3.1 and 3400 ones are. If it's a 3400 it should bolt right on and if your using the heavy duty output extension you can review Roberts build thread and see what I did at the end to get that bracket to clear the 3400 block properly.

Regarding ECU... Obviously replace injectors with something more powerful, make sure the chip is programmed appropriately but the ecu itself will run it fine. You can combine the dual temp sensor setup into the one 3 pin sensor used on 96-99 3x00's or you can keep it split and put a two pin sensor in the head (3500) or intake (3400) and then take the single wire sensor that feeds the dash and you can use the rear block drain port if you want.... OR drill your own hole somewhere else in the coolant jacket.

I'm sure I'm leaving out some other basics, but you can research the 3100 to 3400 swap guide and most of those guidelines still apply since the 3100's were very similar to the MPFI's. Only difference is on the 3x00 motor you have you will not be using the cam sensor, OR the high resolution sensor behind the crank pulley, those are both SFI sensors.

The 3400 swap is VERY easy on this one. It took about 5 hours the last time I did one. The 3500 swap is more complex and costly, but isn't that difficult either.

Personally, I would get one of those Stage 2 street cams from WOT Tech, slap it in a 3400 with 3500 heads and manifolds (if you can't afford headers) and go with it. Prolly 225-230HP with just that and could keep costs to less than $2k.

Oh yeah, 3500... External crank trigger is needed, the internal one on the crank is not the same as the 3400's.

You'll need a 3100 throttle cable too. I'm using the stock OBD1 computer with a tuned chip and the 22lb 3400 injectors. I'm using the stock 2 wire temp sensor in the intake and the stock 1 wire in the block.
