Vibrations

Post by SuperLbody »

Hey guys, wanted to tap the collective knowledge here before I commit to a purchase. I've had a pretty rough vibration at idle and in Reverse that seems to smooth out when put into Drive and accelerating away. I immediately thought motor mount but the upper one looked just fine except the rubber insulator in the upper part of the mount looked worn. So I than checked the lower torque strut mount and it looked like the rubber had been pushed out a bit so I replaced it. Still have that vibration. I than proceeded to check the engine while running, parking brake on and shifting through the gears. It moved quite a bit more than I've seen any do so it leads me to the upper mount being shot but upon inspection I just can't help but doubt it as it doesn't look worn nor has leaked any fluid at least from what I can tell. Any tips?

Could be the trans mount too.

Last time I looked the mounts were pretty cheap atleast for the 88 model just re do them all. I filled my gaps with poly urethane makes it a bit stiffer and they last way longer

Not to nit pick, but the mounts are not fluid filled.

The upper motor mount 92+ is a hydraulic mount... aka liquid filled.

Ha Ha, that would be sweet! Well I took the dive and ordered an original mount. We'll see if that cures it. I'll post some pics of the deal when it comes!

Has there been any normal maintenance done? Plugs, wires, inspect ICM/coils.. any SES light? Perhaps the vibrations are coming from a rough running or ill engine at idle more than just the mounts. Regardless of the mount condition the engine should idle smooth... the bad mount would cause it to rock or move more when under load.

It idles within spec, no SES light. What leads me to be so sure was the rocking while I watched it and when just idling, you can sit in it and hear it through the body but when you step out the car, the engine sounds smooth. Nothing to be heard until you tilt your head into the car.

Have you also checked the transmission mount? When that begins to sag the transmission case will actually get very close to the subframe and hit when the mount is toast.
