Re: 3.1 engine ignition(?) problem

Post by michi »

So guys... after replacing the whole ignition, new FPR and ultrasonic cleaned injectors i still have the same problem. After after i swapped back in the injectors and FPR i thought it was better... i started it and it sounded waaay better and reeved up waaay smoother. I was let it idle and took it for a testdrive... it had its old power again and everything seemed fine. Then i let it idle before i parked it and i listend to the idle sound and noticed it idles like before i swapped these parts... took it again for a testdrive and noticed its got less power than before... couldnt even spin the tires when doing a WOT at low speed in first gear.

I got a video of its idle on youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA25Wo8 ... l=84924572

When the engine is cold it doesnt idle like that and sounds way more healthy. This was recorded when the engine was warmed up for like 5 minutes. Cant tell if it does make more power when its cold though...

Any more suggetions what could cause this problem? I want to get this thing fixed and get my inspection done... emissions are WAAY off.

Fuel Pump has to be the culprit unless the fuel filter is swelling up.

Planned to get my new filter swapped in anyways but havent thought about the fuel pressure... thanks for the tip. Going to get this checked tomorrow.

Damn, I said fuel pump long ago. Should have stuck with that, but I go after the easy stuff first. Ok, for some the fuel pump is easy. Not me!
Can you have the pressure checked? Stock crank sensor still in there?

Stock crank sensor, yes. My buddy has a fuel pressure tester but not the right adapter to get it on the pressure relief valve... damnit. But what wonders me... if the pump is the problem, wouldnt the engine run lean instant of rich?
Also, i tried to find my old o2 sensor but i cant find it... lol. And If i disconnect the o2 wire.. i guess it will run normally when cold and will run in loop mode after the engine warmed up, right?

Out of all of this have you tried changing the coolant temp sensor? It sounds like it's reading a low coolant temp which would revert the engine into ultra rich mode...

Something to check, do you have a firewall leak on the passenger side?
That could cause corrosion on the terminals to the ECM.
Check that they are clean and not all greenish.
All the engine sensors go into the ECM there.
My daughter's 90 had an intermittent high idle and corrosion there was the cause.

If his fan is constantly on, it would make sense to be the CT sender.

Do not have a firewall leak in my car but will double check that for sure and check the ECM.
And yeah, water temp sensor is still the stock one... too bad i always have to wait a week or even more to get new parts... that kinda annoys me and also why i cant find out whats the problem...

Too bad the computer doesnt throw any codes, that would be too easy to find out wheres the problem :)

If you had a tool to read the ecu data that would help immensely.

What are the readings? Ask around we'll tell you what to log and then post that info... That will help a lot.

For one that will rule out the Coolant Temp sensor if you have a reading in the ecu that is correct.

I'll let someone more knowledgeable comment on your readings.
I'm curious if you ever checked the injectors with an ohms meter?
