SBC engine is 60 years old.
I saw that the small block is 60.
Back before you all were born, I did my build of my SBC. I was a skinny man barely out of my teens.
She had .030 over 12.5 to 1 TRW psitons, BRC aluminum rods, a drop
forged steel crank, 2.02 angle plug heads, solid lifter cam, windage screen
deep sump oil pan, headers, high rise aluminum manifold etc.
She powered my 68 Camaro through a turbo400 and 5:38 gears to a best time
of 11.83 on a full 1/4 mile. I did 183 successful runs but lost interest in drag racing.
She sits on an engine stand and has been sitting for many more years than I care
to think about. I think I may someday, bolt her to a trailer just to hear her run again.

That's pretty rad, I consider rocking it old school by driving a beretta.

I think I am up to about 250 engines in various formats.
SBC, LA Chryslers, Hemis, and a few FE Fords.

Re: SBC engine is 60 years old.
That's cool. When was the build?
I did a top end swap (left the flat top short block) on my first SBC when I was like 19. And that seems like forever ago now. haha

Those are the 292 GM Turbo heads, bought them new in 1976.Money pit Beretta wrote:What heads are those?
I didn't do anything to the ports. I just had bigger spring pockets,
Teflon valve seals and a competition valve job done on them.
This build was in late 1970s, so close to forty years and 50 pounds ago.
Looking at the posts from BerettaZ28, Mr Pink and Camaro paint job after ten years,
just to name a few, takes my memory back to my build.
You guys are doing it so much better today.
It's amazing and you can document and post pics for all to follow.
I just had the old Kodak 110 camera and then I had to take the film in to develop.
So I only have a few old photos of back then.
There is an abundance of information at your finger tips on the internet too.
I bought and read "How to Hotrod your small block Chevy", Bill Jenkins and
"The Chevrolet Racing engine". I asked a lot of questions at the speed shop.
I still have those old grease stained books, just in case, haha.

That car in your picture, is that a early 70s Camaro? Is that the one you did the top end on?woody90gtz wrote:That's cool. When was the build?

Re: SBC engine is 60 years old.
The information out there today is awesome. It opens the door to all these easy retrofits like 3400s, T56s and LS swaps.
Yeah, that pic is my 80Z. I beat the snot out of that 355 for years and then sold it to build the EFI 383 going back in.

I'll have to ask my friend, but I'm almost sure he had the same heads(just 20 years later). They were damn nice and his were exhaust ported(that was the only change). Pulled hard even past 7k with a duel pattern cam and a bone stock short block(TRW rebuild kit).
keep'em flying!

The sad part about this tho is this next generation is becoming more and more lazy and don't even search for information on the web... they just ask questions and wait for someone to tell them what to do because that's how they've been raised.ifixalot wrote: There is an abundance of information at your finger tips on the internet too.

I shifted at around 7200k rpm and by the time the trans shifted it would hit 7600K rpm.Money pit Beretta wrote:I'll have to ask my friend, but I'm almost sure he had the same heads(just 20 years later). So yes these heads were good for high rpms.

That 383 is that a small block stroked to 383?woody90gtz wrote:The information out there today is awesome. It opens the door to all these easy retrofits like 3400s, T56s and LS swaps.

EFI is something I've thought about for the Camaro today.
I've got a stock 400 BBC in it and I see they have fuel injection kits. I hate the crappy performance until
the carburetor engine warms up. But at near $2000, for the few miles I drive it, ti's probably not worth it.

Yeah, .030 over 350 with a 3.75 stroke.ifixalot wrote:That 383 is that a small block stroked to 383?woody90gtz wrote:The information out there today is awesome. It opens the door to all these easy retrofits like 3400s, T56s and LS swaps.

EFI is expensive, but I'm done screwing with carburetors. I hate them with a passion. Always a compromise. And I'm going port EFI with the Camaro and not one of those TBI retrofits. I have TBI on the truck and I'm not overly impressed. Aftermarket TBI is probably better, but I have stock hardware TBI on the truck and stock hardware MPFI on the Beretta and the difference is night & day.
