Some of you from the other site know that I'm restoring my GTU. Anyway, it's almost done and it's time to pick new tires. I'm using the oem GTU rims and was going to get the 215/50/16 instead of the oem 205/55/16.

So I did some sniffin and see now that the 225/50/16 is the HIGHLY recommended size for the oem 16" rim. From what I read, those that went with the 225 series love the way they look, but my concern is will they rub?

I worry that the 225's on the front are going to rub when turning....can anyone speak from experience on this?

If you haven't lowered the car at all they should be fine

My car has always rolled on the 225/50R16s since i have owned it and never had any issues at all. Go for them, not only do they look better, but the really help with handling and road grip ;) GL

i had no issue running 225's on my 18's with the car lowered 2", so you'll be fine. i had no issue at all untill i went with a set of 245's, then it rubbed like it was going out of style. offset on the wheels was 42, that also which can make a difference, compared to what stock is.


all in all, i dont think you will have any problems

I have 225/50/16 tires on stock rims with Eibach lowering springs and they rub a tad a full lock.

yeah i think mine did rub the fender liner a lil but now that i think about it, but never had them rub the struts

The 225s on my 17s rub the fender liner on the driver side at full lock, but that's only because of the CAI. Not an issue.

I use 235/45/17 up front and have no rub, but I think I only have a passenger side fender liner.

remember boys and girls, this is also very dependent upon what rim offset your running...Too far out and the outer edge of the tire will touch the front or rear when turning, also too far in and you can hit the spring perch with the wrong width, and also have the same turning touch, however I think you would have to extend in beyond the spring perch to have inside edge rub... its typically a rim that has to little of an offset that allows the outside edges to touch when at full lock.

I know mine does on the passenger side, not so much on the drivers though, not sure why.

Ive noticed on Lisa's car that the driver side wheel is out maybe 2 inches further than the passenger side and she occasionally has one of them rub in reverse, I think it rubs on the mud flap though not the perch or the wheel well.

you might want to look and see if one of the control arms are bent... 2" different in width is really weird.

arms are fine, I noticed it when I went to replace the shafts and it was still like that after. it doesn't really effect anything, I figured maybe the engine was shifted a bit or something.

Going back on your statement John, how would one find the offset of a set of wheels if you didnt buy them brand new? The 17s i just bought have ample clearance in the front, but i want to make sure im good in the back. Front is good cause like you said a while back, when you use N-body spindles with N-body hubs, your front wheels tend to loose a half inch of the track width on both sides.
