Which tranny to use?

Post by Figure8racer5 »

I race a 93 beretta on the figure 8 and oval. It has a built 3.1 with 10.5/1 compression. I am needing to know what is a good automatic tranny to run in it on a 1/4 mile oval track in 2nd gear. I need to get off the corners hard and pull all the way down the straightaway

3T40. The 4T60's 2nd gear sucks unless you want to come out of the corner slow and build up to a high top end. Do to how short that track is I don't think it's a good idea. What can you use for a FDR? Is there a limit?

4t60e is 1.56
3t40 is 1.60

The biggest problem he would have is he can't control the 4t60 unless he got a pre 94 non E version, but even then its extra weight for nothing since he'll never use 4th gear.

And his biggest gain would be to get the 33/37 chain setup that I'm running so he has a better final drive. That takes a typical beretta from 2.96 or so all the way to 3.73 final... bumping your effective 2nd gear from 4.73 to 5.96

I have a 32/37 gear set for a 3t40 (th125) if you need one.

Make it a 3.73 and there would be no looking back.

What would the tag read on the tranny to find one with the 33/37 setup or what car would that come factory in and if it helps any... The thundercars run a 4.56 in 2nd out there but it may be different for the FWD idk. Im new to the beretta. I would usually run hondas. Lol. But sounds like you guys know your stuff so im goin with you info!!!

I think I paid $125 for it.

I'll have to look.

I talked to a guy that runs out there and he said that the 373 setup would cause the car to over rev. He said the car already has a 33/37 sprocket in it and the one that use to be in it was a 35/35. Is there anything inbetween or should i just give it a shot the car just seems a little sluggish right now

Its the stock converter out of a 87 cav. Theres no dash in the car to know the speed. He said it was turnin about 7800 when he ran it there last but it just doesnt seem as snappy as the stock tranny that was in the car when i first sold it to him... They rebuilt the motor and swapped the tranny for the figure 8 but i want something for the oval as well

7800 wtf does your cam even make power up there? Most 3.1's choke after 6 even built due to shitty flowing intakes

7800 would be a ridiculous rpm to turn on a 3.1 engine, even with a cam, compression and porting the powerband is going to fall on it's face after 5500 rpm.

What are the class limitations? If a 5 speed is an option, that gets my vote. Swapping them isn't hard if you have a donor car.
