Just buy a 3.1 with a manual.  Why go through the trouble?

Well Scott you cant go and buy a 3.1 5spd GTZ :P ÂÂÂ

I did it to my car because mine had a lot of money into it and had gone through more then one auto.  My car also doesnt have rust in the places others do so I stuck with it.

I went about it the expensive way the second time around with a stage 2 clutch, Fidanza flywheel etc.  But Aaron has done this swap on Jim Metz's car and it came out great.  He has a very specific price quote which includes his labor.

If you do all the labor yourself this could be less then $500.  If you pay someone to do it and do upgrades too, you are looking at more like $1500.

All the parts needed in the swap are for sale through Cack and Steph in a listing somewhere in for sale.  I think the price is around $4-500 and is still available last I saw.

Maybe this is an obvious question, but you guys who did this do have the transmission/neutral safety switch still attached right?

1991 Cavalier Z24- Racing seats, MSD wires, relocated MSD coils, 2.5" exhaust, ported exhaust manifolds, high volume oil pump, poly grafite front end, 92+ brake upgrade, drilled and slotted rotors, 1.5" lowering, 17" Klasse wheels...

Future Plans: 18's, paint, rear discs, more horsepower...

You're right, that does seem like a lot of work....not that it was ever assumed to be simple.  But judging by that, it's almost if you're better off buying a donor car with the complete engine/transmission set-up and just transferring the whole drivetrain instead of picking stuff apart.

Sorry to bring back an old topic, but I was wondering if there were any big differences between doing the swap on a multi port and doing in of a SFI (3x00)? A new junkyard just opened up closer to me, and I think if I can find a place to do this (my apartment management doesn't even like me changing my oil in the parking lot), it's about time I did it.

Both heavywoody and McGavinZ26 have done it on their 3x00's. Yes it's possible.

Well, I was planning on doing it in 30 minutes on a Sunday morning, but so much for those plans... And I know it's possible to get it done, with enough work/money put in, anything is, I'm asking how different it is for a 3100, as the write up was done with a 3.1 multiport.

You'll need 93 or older subframe and control arms, weld one mount in for the trans, and do some wiring changes. If you get control-arms/trans from an older car that doesn't have ABS or same ABS setup then you won't have ABS anymore.

Under the steering wheel, flat harness connector, about 9 wires.  The fourth wire, light blue, location D.  Snip this wire so that the car does not always lock because it thinks its in drive and locking the doors.

Speed sensor: splice in speed sensor, same purple and yellow color wires.  Terminal supply has the connector in peices so that you dont need any splicing, just tcut and assemble the new connector.  I didn't need any extra wire to do this.

for the park neutral switch, splice yellow and purple wire together, this will let the car start.  Make sure that the switch is turned phusically to a drive gear to get the car to rev above 4000 rpms.

reverse lights: THe harnes that I got off Corry's 1988 beretta had a 2 wire harness for the reverse lights that came off the manual transmission.  THe colors should be blue and green.  The harness on my car that had the yellow and purple wire for the park/nuetral switch will have a wire (possibly green) for the reverse lights.  Connect the greens and then connnect the blue to anything hot.  C1B or C1D should be hot on that plug.  C1F should be the reverse lights.


That's all I know. I think that's it other than just putting the parts in the car and bolting it down.....

i have a 1995 z26 with the 3400 in it and my auto is going out and i wood like to put a 5 speed in it and i do not know what will work like what flywheel will fit the 3400 and what 5 speed will fit it if any one can help me that wood be nice

Hi warren, since we've discussed transmissions with you in another thread, I won't address that right now, but I don't recall if anybody mentioned the flywheel to you or not before. Just look for one from any FWD 2.8 MPFI or 3.1 MPFI V-6 from ~'87 up, they are all the same and will bolt right on to your 3400's crank. If you are buying a new flywheel and need a specific year to order, just ask for a '90 Beretta 3.1 flywheel. Do NOT look at the RWD cars, like the Camaros or Firebirds, as they have a much thicker flywheel that won't work for you. Aside from that, if you find a specific car in the salvage yard and you are not sure if the parts will work, post up the year/make/model/engine and we can help you determine if it works and is worth your time to grab, but again, any 2.8 or 3.1 GM V-6 with a manual uses the same flywheel, I think ~'86 and older are balanced differently though, so stay newer.
You can also go to o'reillys or rock auto's web-site, look up the '90 3.1 Beretta and they have an interchange list. According to O'reilly's, the Beretta 2.0 and 2.2 four-bangers also use the same flywheel, so the list is quite extensive.
