Intake questions

Well summer is finally here and I'll definatly have the time and money to start advancing my little Beretta. I know that I want to start looking into some engine upgrades so I'm guessing I want to start with a cold air intake. It seems like a thing to do but I have a few questions first:

1) What are the actual benifits of the intake? I've heard more power and better fuel economy but I've heard that it depends on how much you spend as well...

2) How much do they cost on average... I got a '88 so I'll need to replace the MAF sensor and whatnot as well. I definatly wont go for the cheapest either since I'll have the money to blow.

3) Is it worth it for me? I definatly don't do any racing or whatnot but the more power is always a treat. I drive my car often so if it effects the fuel economy positively I'd like to know.

If you don't race, or want to hear your intake make noise, it is not worth your trouble.

Well who doesn't like the noise? Aside from the 60+ citizen club. Plus the extra power is what I'm looking to do for my beretta right now. Like I said I heard it can get slightly better gas mileage too which is always a plus since i'm paying $1.059/L for gas right now.

If it is cold air then it might help MPG.  Don't do a hot air intake.

I'm looking around at brands. Is the sticky one on this board a good deal to look into?

Transgenic is good.  You will have to ask Aaron if they make one for your model.  I'm sure he can come up with something.

Alright time to bring this topic back in action. Now that I have a bit more money saved and a few repairs done on my beretta I'm really starting to look in the market of an intake system. Mostly I'm looking to do something cutstom, hopefully which wouldn't involve ordering off the internet, but if I have to, I will.

I notice that the Transgenic intakes are for Non-MAF intakes. Well mine is a MAF and I'm guessing most others would need the swap as well. What sort of parts am I looking for to replace this? Just the basic IAT (if I'm not mistaken) or is there anything else that has to be replaced?

On my 88 GT I just removed the stock air box and filter and replaced it with a K&N cone air filter. The filter cost me about $40.00, but I actually did see a difference in fuel economy. After a year of using it, it has paid for it self.

As noted above that is a warm air intake, like mine, they are not so good... I had a CAI for a while then realized my battery didn't have enough juice to remote start my car when it was in the trunk, too long of a wire running up front and the voltage drop killed the alarm resulting in not starting unless your turning the key.  So I had to put my battery back up front, now I'm looking at the transgenic one, it is the only one that will fit my application unless I start to customize.

I am sure if you had a nice yellow top batt. and the right guage wire (Like 2g) , it would work just fine.

I hate the noise of my intake.  At idle it sounds like ***, when your actually moving it sounds really cool, but at idle its louder than my exhaust with a turbo muffler.

I am almost thinking of making a sheet metal air box and attaching a pipe with will collect cold air from the bumper, and then just using a stock replacement K&N. Then just run another pipe from the throttle body to the air box. ÂÂÂ Just a thought anyone ever done this?  It should reduce the noise and act as a cold air/ram air intake.

Cold air hands down. VERY seldom is a short ram (warm air) the best bet.
