3X00 top end swap
3X00 top end swap
What all do i have to have to make this work. I know i need the heads, lower intake, plenum, and probably the TB. Do i gotta have any type of wiring harnesses and other things of that nature. And is this really worth all the trouble. My car is leaking oil around the lower intake, so i figured if i had to pull the intake then why not pull the head and slap a 3X00 top end on er, if it gives a solid noticable gain.

I think you need lifters and maybe adjustable pushrods. Or just one or the other.

not sure on the details, but it'll give you a good boost! at least 20hp. If you get 2000+ 3100, or 3400 heads & intake manifolds, probably more. (larger valves, way bigger intake manifold runners, etc)
With a 5speed you're looking at one fun car!

Here, I'll make it easy on you before everyone else comes in and says this.
Just swap the entire engine, you will be able to get an entire engine for just a little bit more than just the pieces, you will have the newer engine, its much more cost and time effective.  It really isn't that much harder to swap in the entire engine.  With a 92 you even have the new style mounts making it that much easier

I at first was going to say go & do the entire 34SFI swap, but I figured they read everything and just wanted the heads swapped.

I just want to swap heads on my 3.1. Only is it more cost effective if you just do the engine swap with no plans for performance.  Theres the cost of the engine and thats it.
I want to port and polish my heads (sitting in the varsal tank now), port match my intake manifolds, port my exhaust manifolds... which means I need to get a complete upper gasket set.  So I figure I get the heads and intakes used, plus the gasket set, plus the machine work, I am looking at the cost of a 3X00 engine swap, but I get more ponies (I consider my labour free thats why its benifical in my circumstance).
For simplicity and time its easier to just do a motor swap and in some cases its even cheaper than a top end swap since you may not have to get cylinder heads machined and get the upper gasket set .
But there is definate power to be had because of the higher flowing, D-shaped ports. the 3.1 makes 140hp and 185lb ft of torque. The 3100 makes 175hp and 195lb ft of torque or something like that.

I think there's certain 3100's that match the 3400 for power. It's all in the years.

If you ever intend to get a better cam, you should keeps the 3.1 and go with a 3x00 top end, best of both worlds! Plus you don't have to screw around with a custom motor mount, or any mounts for that matter.

I would love to be able to do the 3400 swap. Theres a junkyard in Dudly NC called young's junkyard. On the weekends you can pay $40.00 and whatever you can carry across the 20 yard scale by yourself is yours for $40.00. I see it to be a lot more likely for me to carry the top end to a 3X00 across rather than the whole motor, not to mention the aggravation of getting the motor outta the car. I figure being im pretty good at porting heads, and i have all the equipment to grind the valves, and valve seats, that i could put together a little spicier top end than what i got. With all that toped off with some 1.6:1 rockerarms then i shouldnt have any problems with getting 170HP and 190-200ft-lbs of torque and some 15.4-15.5 in the 1/4. But i could be way off, its just my estimate.

You should be closer to high 14's actually.

All you can carry, are you allowed to have a back pack... Never mind that a Hockey duffel bag LOL. I think 1988GTU is right on that 160HP for the 3100. Its still a 20HP gain for almost nothing. If you want to PNP the heads and do the valves its going to scream till red line. Dont forget to get a cam with that combo though.

Are the wiring harnesses the same. Ex will the 3.1 injectors plugs fit the 3X00 injectors, will the Tps, egr, fuelrails and things of that nature fit without all extensive modification. If i rip the topend of this motor, i dont want alot of headache on getting this stuff together. If i need any wiring harnesses i need to know so i can get that off the vehicle with the 3X00 while im at the junkyard.
