My 1994 DGGM "Base" - The "other"..."base"

Post by Baims_91Base »

I'm not sure I've really given this car much of a true introduction - I think I've mentioned it here and there because I've been asked about where my GTU has gone, but that's been about it. I got this car from my grandmother about a year ago when I decided I was done putting money into my GTU. (It had some rust issues with a 300k+ mile midwestern chassis - it also developed an external coolant leak and on the engine around the one of the heads and block on the 3.1L I had in there for the last 50k miles of the car's life.) My grandma was the 2nd owner of this car and has only owned it the past 5 years prior to giving it to me - she bought it with maybe 34k or 37k miles on it from a guy in town. (My mom also happened to worked with the original owner for many years so I'm aware of the full line of ownership of this car - even have the original window sticker.)

Anyways, I'll start off with the factory specs of my 4th Beretta (only 2 currently living and on the roster):

1994 Beretta Base - Dark Green Gray Metallic Paint (Rare for a '94 to have)
2.2L MPFI engine
Automatic transmission
Power locks
Rear defrost
A/C

...and that's it - another optioned-down base Beretta to drive again, haha! I don't even have tilt on the steering column in this one - I'm going to have to swap that out eventually.

It is interesting to have a somewhat 'stock' version of the Beretta you've modded. ;) Although I'm getting bothered that this one is an automatic now - considering another conversion down the road (unfortunately not a priority right now.)

The last major upgrade I did to this car was install power windows - my 3rd Beretta conversion. (Just can't stand crank windows!) Although when I pulled out the carpet, I found that even low-mileage Berettas aren't spared from the curse. Wet carpet padding all along the passenger's side! :( Not sure how long it's been leaking for, but I'm glad I caught it when I did!

Things I've done or added since owning the car:

Added 94 2.2L full gauge cluster (swapped in my factory odometer roll)
Power window conversion
Z04 foglight switch installed (thinking about doing Z04 lighting in the base bumper, but hate even touching things on this car when nothing's wrong with them - switch is useless for now, but there just in case, haha)
Power trunk release with button from 97+ Malibu (hidden in center console under armrest)
FFP aluminum/polyurethane lower dogbone
Polyurethane upper motor mount insert
Higher-flowing intake with cone filter
Alpine CDA-7893 CD player (was in my '91 forever and in my GTU after that - going strong for almost 10 years now)
Auxiliary 1/8" stereo cord ran under and through center console for iPod hookup
Custom fit, yet look stock on the outside, the G6 tweeters and Pioneer 4" speakers that were in my GTU into the kickpanels for a poor man's version of a component set - works pretty well considering it was parts I already had and it sounds far and away better than what is there stock.
Sony Xplod 6x9"s in the rear deck (also from my GTU)
Silverstar headlight bulbs
Z51 rear swaybar piggy-backed onto 93 GTZ internal rear swaybar
Strut tower brace
Black GTZ wheels
EDIT: GTZ seats (although I'd prefer to have proper light gray Z26 seats and proper door panels too...especially now that I have power windows and need different door panels anyway now)

A few more things on the horizon for this car - another set of hand-me-downs from my GTU (lowering springs and KYB's) as well as what you'll find pictured below:

Image

I got extremely lucky to find the GTU kit I did - believe it or not, this is not the set from my old GTU. I will also install the spoiler last, if I do at all. Really on the fence about installing it and would rather source another trunklid to drill in case I change my mind. ;)

Full directory of pictures here:

http://www.berettaspeed.com/dustin/94base/dggm_gtu/
(My stepdad took the original photos and I just re-sized and uploaded. I'll get to see them in person next weekend - I just had to get a preview for now of how they turned out.)

A couple randoms:

Image

What it looked like when my grandma had it - not bad, but I had to remove the pinstripe and put a decent set of wheels on it not long after I got it ;)

Image

This was back in 2006 when my GTU was still kicking and when it was rare to see the '91 and '94 next to each other - now it happens quite a bit.

I've posted this one in another topic, but this is pretty much how the '94 looked prior to the 14" steelies going on again for winter.

Don't think I'm crazy for wanting to convert another base  I love the look of a clean base model, but when I had a quality GTU kit fall in my lap and after seeing everything painted up in DGGM paint, I just have to see how it turns out! I'll also probably find a decent set of tires and clean up my GTU wheels so I can start using those again.

BTW, 5am posts are the product of passing out early on a Friday night.

Was Dark Green Gray Metallic really rare for the 94's? My car was that color! Sadly, it's at the crusher from being rear ended :'(

This thing is sweet! I really like this car a lot, it really rides, drives, runs and shifts like what I closest imagine a new Beretta being like.

I think you might be somewhat crazy, but then again that'd mean I'm crazy for having GTU stuff on my GT. So cancel that idea.

It's going to look sick with the drop and painted ground effects. A unique combo to say the least, it'll be a first for my eyes.

I actually love the look of it when your grandma owned it, even with the chrome hubcaps on it. I love the look of a clean Base. The GTU gfx are going to look great on there though.
