Fairchild would need an automotive distributor like Rock Auto , 1A Auto, US Auto Parts, Classic Industries, etc. to express interest in distributing a specific part
Ok... Everyone send Rock Auto an e-mail and see how much they care about 15 people wanting to get belt weatherstripping... They wont invest in the $5k mold and stocking fees and god who knows what else to get these made for just us... THEY need to see a demand to ensure they will PROFIT off of making them. It's just the fact that Fairchild will not work directly with the buyer that's why they said I need to go through an auto parts supplier.

Ryan, you have a lot of dreams and unfortunately that's what they are going to be for a long time. I don't think you will ever scrape up enough interest in these cars to put together anything that you want to.

We are on our own, we need to improvise unless some rich bastard wants to restore his Beretta and goes through the motions with GSH to have a profile and mold made and takes the hit on the cost. If you can scrape together $5k-$6k then we could have GSH make a batch of these, but at the same time we need to provide them with ALL the info necessary including what material an so on... OR find a prototype company to deal with. I've put a lot of effort into this and have been shot down at EVER corner so I'm just going to try to make something on my own.

I'm serious though, You send Rock Auto an e-mail and find out what the demand needs to be for them to think of stocking another type of weatherstrip for a vehicle. I think that will be an eye opener. And it doesn't help that the weatherstrip is completely specific to this car and is not shared across any other platform, even more of a reason to not make it.

Jon here's what I sent Rockauto

Hello my name is Ryan I'm restoring a 1990 Chevy Beretta GTZ and I am part of the beretta.net forum as well. A topic came up for a weather stripping supplier called fairchild weatherstripping. Now I was wondering on the belt moldings on the door of berettas, it's the felt/rubber/metal reinforced strip that runs the length of the window that wipes the dew off the windows when you roll them down. This is a common problem with these cars and is nearly impossible to find originals let alone NOS GM ones. Well all of us at the Beretta forum were wondering what the demand would have to be to get somebody to make a mold and supply them.

Thank you,
Ryan Heisey

Here's what Rockauto sent back to me

Dear Ryan,

Thank you for your message and interest in RockAuto.  I apologize that we currently do not have belt weatherstrips available for your vehicle. Your question of how much demand would be needed to manufacture this part, would need to be asked to a manufacturer, like Fairchild.  We do stock most Fairchild parts, so if they decide to manufacture this part in the future, we would likely carry it in our online catalog.

For more information about our parts and catalog, please visit our FAQ page: http://www.rockauto.com/lang/en/faq.html

Thank you,

Danielle C.

Well there ya go they just sent you in a circle... Fairchild says they wont make it till a vendor shows interest in it and RA says they wont stock it unless Fairchild makes it.

Welcome to my world.

Send them this and say one of our members already did and they said to contact you to determine the demand necessary for RA to express "interest" in distributing the part.
Dear Jonathan,

Thank you for your inquiry. The costs to start manufacturing a new part can range from $1000-$2500 depending on the complexity of the extrusion. The minimum commitment is usually 1000 pcs.. Fairchild would need an automotive distributor like Rock Auto , 1A Auto, US Auto Parts, Classic Industries, etc. to express interest in distributing a specific part. Have you checked the above distributors? When you mentioned that no GM books list a part #, is it possible the original part was manufactured as part of the door? Sorry we are unable to help you.

Kind Regards,

DIY_Stu has been making dew strips for the Fiero guys! ...but looks like he hasn't been heard from in 2 months...

http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum4/HTML/043801-21.html

I would bet that there are a LOT of people looking for very similar product on parallel paths. Maybe not exactly the same profile, but the challenge is the same. Let's think: Beretta/Corsica, Fiero, Grand Am/Calais/other N body... W body?... and surely many other GM cars of the era...

So, I would bet each community has its own demand... but maybe the communities don't talk to each other?

I'm very interested in a two sets! '88 Corsica and '91 Calais 442

Thanks for the legwork!

Sorry, didn't want to start off my first post on the wrong foot, but I was just going to look for a suitable felt strip that may fit in that channel. Should have specified.
