Season 10
I just realized that I am about to enter my 10th season with the black GTZ! Lots of things have come and gone, but I still love bringing her out and proving to people that this car is much faster than they thought.
I have (locally) conquered both street tire and competition tire classes, bringing home points championships in both ST and DSP classes. This car is still legal for ST classing, as the only mod that put it into DSP was the tires.
So here's the dilemma: With both sets of competition tires about wore out (and harder than a rock at this point anyway), I'm in the market to buy tires - for the first time in about 6 years LOL... Cost is a factor, so I may be switching back to street tires if I can stay competitive. Looking for any opinions out there on tires - for autocross that is. I used to run Falken Azenis back in the day, but street tire tech has come a long long way since then and I know there are street tires out there as fast as my Toyo Proxes and old Hoosier R's.
Opinions?

Re: Season 10
This one looks pretty popular, and right at your 140 tread wear limit.

Re: Season 10
Yea, I'm looking hard at the Hankooks vs. the Bridgestone Re-11's. There is a new Re-11 this year (in response to the Hankooks), so I'm tempted to go that way. I'm also running on the 15" crosslaces, so I'm trying to find a size closest to 225/50/15. I think I might have to go 225/45/15, but whatever...

Re: Season 10
I had Hankooks on my 17s and was unimpressed. They dry-rotted really fast too (kinda typical for Chinese tires). 4 years and they were so cracked I dumped em. This was 2005-2009, so maybe they are better quality now...but I would stay away personally.

Re: Season 10
Hankook is actually a Korean company. Either way, there's probably a big difference between what's at the top of the line performance tire and what's at the bottom. The OE Hankooks are nothing to write home about, but neither are my OE Continentals.

Re: Season 10
I don't think these were bottom of the barrel quality...they were K106 "ultra high perf summer" tires. I forget what the treadwear was, but I'm almost 100% positive they said China on 'em.

Yup, and they do say "Made in China" right on the sidewall...I just checked an old pic.

There are tons of tires that are made in China, but not from a Chinese company.

Re: Season 10
ROFL!
Eric, the Ventus RS-3's mentioned above are very good tires... They are one of two hot tires right now in street tire autox classes. Its between that and the Bridgestone Re-11's. I have actually seen a team that was sponsored by Bridgestone switch to the Hankooks. Don't know if they will be back with the new version, the Re-11a, but regardless it is that close...
