Adding a cone filter Cone Filter Installation
 

This is the procedure for adding a High Flow Air Intake system to your Beretta. The test vehicle was a 1989 Chevy Beretta with a 2.8 auto. This set-up will work for all Berettas, however the pipe routing changes from engine to engine.  Above and below are a few pics showing differant engines: 

Why add a cone filter?

While respecting the engineers for their design of the engines in the Beretta, there are ways of improving performance. The cone filter is one of those ways. The stock airbox is very restrictive and the cone filter gives the engine a higher flow of air, thus increasing HP. This alone will not make a dramatic increase, so I recommend also installing a High Flow Exhaust system as well. Together, they made an approx. 20-30 HP increases in my car. This is an estimate since the car was never dynoed. It is based on performance specifications for all parts used from the manufacturers.

Parts Needed

  • Cone Filter (There are several manufacturers of cone filters. My personal choice was a filter designed by Advanced Concepts. Cost was $60. I also bought a Breather Filter for $15.)

  • Rubber Throttle Body coupler made for an import (This coupler will fit our TB. $5 at any import speed shop)
  • 3" Aluminum Exhaust pipe custom bent to fit into engine bay. ($25 at a muffler shop)
  • Hose clamps (You may re-use the ones from your original airbox, though you will need an extra one)

    Tools Needed

    • Medium Tipped Flathead Screwdriver
    • 13mm socket with ratchet and extension (for removing the lower part of the stock airbox and bracket)

Procedure

Loosen the 4 screws on the top half of the airbox and remove it.  Loosen the clamp on the TB and use the 13mm socket and ratchet to remove the bolt holding down the lower half of the airbox. Also unclip the IAT and remove it. You may need to remove the battery or prop it out of the way to remove the bracket that was holding the airbox. Those are also 13mm bolts. The coupler will have 2 different sized ends on it. Take the smaller end of the coupler and stretch it over the pipe. You can clamp it for security, but it should be tight enough not to come off. Place your filter on the other end of the pipe and clamp it on. Install the setup on the TB and make sure it is clamped tight. You should also install the breather filter in the front valve cover as to eliminate the CCV tube from the valve cover to the original intake tube. Otherwise, you will have to drill a hole and insert a rubber grommet into the custom pipe for the tube. The IAT can be left dangling where it is, but you can get a better cold air reading by relocating it.  Please refer to the engine mods area for instructions on how to relocate your IAT.
