GTZ/Z26 Rear Bumper Installation

GTZ/Z26 Rear Bumper Installation

This article will explain the steps to remove the rear bumper on your car and replace it with the rear bumper from a GTZ/Z26.

The car in the pictures is my 1989 GT, all other Berettas will have a similar if not identical setup. This rear bumper swap took me approximately 1 hour and is a rather simple procedure. Overall the removal requires the removal of 8 nuts, 2 bolts and 2 metal clips, all of which I will picture in this article.

To complete this swap you will want to make sure you have all of the necessary parts. You can view a list of parts here. To buy these parts from the dealer will be rather pricey, so your best bet would be to find them in your local junk yard.

So now lets get started. Your first step is going to be to crawl under your car and orientate yourself, have a look around and pay attention to how the bumper is connected to the car. Now you are going to want to unplug the wiring harness for the rear bumper. You will find the plug to the right or drivers side of where the license plate is behind the bumper. Unplug this.

Your next step is going to be to remove the metal clips, shown here, figure 1. It is located where the bumper and rear quarter panel meet by the rear tire. There are two of them, 1 on each side. I used a flat headed screwdriver to do this. After these are removed we will continue on.

Your next step is going to be to find the bar that goes from the bumper to the frame of the car, shown here, figure 2, and remove the 10mm bolt connecting it to the frame. Again there are 2 of these, one on each side. Done, ok lets go on.

The next step is to remove the 4 nuts that hold the bumper to the bumper shocks, shown here, figure 3. You can not see all 4 bolts in that picture, but they are there. These bolts are 13mm and again there are 8 of them 4 on each of the 2 bumper shocks. As you remove all of these bolts, be careful because these are all that is holding up the bumper now. Finished, ok lets continue.

The last and final step in removal is to give the bumper a pull and it should come off, if not you may have to go back and loosen the bolts shown in figure 1. I did not have to do this on my car as the bumper came off very easily. Here is a picture of what the car looks like minus the bumper figure 4.

Well you are half-way done with your modification and to quote the words from the Chiltons manual "installation is reverse of removal". You may want to have a second pair of hands there when installing the new bumper to hold the bumper in place while you tighten up the bolts. I did not have one and I did ok by myself, but it would have been helpful.

Here are some before and after pictures.
