So you had not enough offset and they rubbed the outer lip? Stock offset is 42mm IIRC. So if these new wheels give you 22mm more clearance with or without the spacer? Rebuilding a Quad4 is WAY easier than a V6 swap. Seriously - these engines are pretty damn simple and if you build it right, it will last a loooooong time.

On a side note, we did discover that the rear caliper pins were pretty dry so we lubed those up a bit more but I'd imagine that's just going to help them release and have nothing to do with the excess pressure.
