Anyone swap a 4t60

Post by coryh8504 »

Just curious if anyone here has ever swapped a 4t60 into their car as apposed to the 4t40 trans.

4t60 comes with the 3800 engine.

Ideas or info?

My 3800 originally came with the 4T65E (Series II engine from '97), the replacement for the 4T60E. Both of my '95 Z-26s, originally 3100 cars, came with the only option available to a '95 Z-26 (boo Chevy, what were you thinking?!), the 4T60E. Obviously, that plugs right in with the proper ECM to run it... But if you are talking the older 4T60 vs 440-T4, as I understand it that was basically just a re-designation of the same transaxle. It wasn't until the "E" (for "Electronic") models were released that there was a real difference... A more knowledgeable person here could chime-in on that, mostly I REMOVE the slush-boxes and graft-in a REAL gear-box... :pardon:
Primarily, look at CV joints, count the inner number of splines, that is going to be your primary 'hurdle' for any transaxle compatibility once you are past the bell-housing. Yes, flex-plates CAN be an issue too, but relatively easy to overcome. Are you still looking at the 3800 or a 60-degree V-6 for this?

Ok. My 96 z26 is getting the transplant and I wanted to upgrade all of it. Wasn't sure if was a 3t40 or the 4t40 in my ol Girl.

But If it's plug and play..then I'm good. Are they the same hub splines and size?

Specifically which body-line, model, and year is the donor? Sounds like you are doing the 3800 swap? I can help you look that all up, but I do believe you are going to have spline differences on a lot of the various body-lines for these transaxles... GM got weird on a lot of stuff though, so making an assumption is a bad idea. So far as hubs go, that won't be what you want to be concerned about -if you have an H-Body, or a W-Body donor for instance, your L-Body will NOT accept those CV shafts, and the difference in hub-spline is only ONE of the reasons why. It is the INBOARD spline that matters... If you like, shoot me a Private Message with the basic donor info, I'll get a notification right away. Otherwise, I may not see the Post from you for a few days -I don't check in on the Forum here daily anymore...
Your Z-26 came with the newer, fully electronic version of the 4T40, aka the 4T60E. Older Berettas, from the first year up through ~'94 had the TH125C (3T40) hooked up to their V-6s, no clue when or if they discontinued that 3-speed for use on the 2.0/2.2 engine family. There are fundamental differences in the newer trans as compared to the older version that I could only help you decipher with more information and time to research it. If you wanted to know year-by-year changes of the Muncie/Getrag 282 manual 5-speed, or how it differs from the Holy-Grail 284, I could help you out a lot faster, but... That isn't your direction... :good:
