Changing color of console.

For my 90, I picked up a front ashtray assbly, the whole thing. BUT it is black but was in great shape so I grabed it. What is a good process for cleaning up, prepping the unit to take new color, interior paint? What color of grey is it in 1990??? Anyone know?

Google SEM interior paint. When prepped correctly it's good stuff.

SEM die is what you want, not paint.

I've found this to be the best source for interior fabrics, carpet, tools, etc. They have good prices & great customer service.

Ha. Notice the web url for the SEM product. Interesting huh? Say what you want but the product, in my mind - and I've used it to change the color of an entire interior, is more dye than paint. The primary difference being that it doesn't leave as heavy of a top coat on the parts. Not as much film build if you will. You will find this looks better (less washing out of the part's molded in grain/texture) and less opportunity for sun induced cracking (clearly not as critical for a console, but a really big deal with an IP).

SEM is not a dye and it does not soak in. It is a paint that adheres well to interior plastics. It is good stuff, but still not perfect. I went that route with my 95Z black interior conversion and had issues with durability over time since it was my year-round DD. I went factory black stuff for 91 for just that reason.

SEM I used landau black, but my current car has factory black panels.
